The matter of procuring a suitable office was left to the committee. Means of providing funds were discussed. It was suggested that the Men's Patriotic Committee should be approached for assistance, and the note sounded in the discussion was that the ladies were prepared to do any work that was necessary, but they could not see their way to provide funds. It was eventually decided to ask the Men's Patriotic Committee for assistance. THE MEN'S COMMITTEE. EX-TROOPER WANTS ASSISTANCE. The New Plymouth Patriotic Committee met last night. Present: Messrs J. E. Wilson (chairmai)), W. .T. Chaney, C. Carter, W. A. C'ollis, C'. E. Bellringer, 0. N. Firth, J. R. Hill, Adjutant Home, and the Rev. A. H. Colvile. A circular letter was received from the Minister of Defence in regard to the new booklet which is being issued for recruits. It was decided to ask the Minister to forward two hundred booklets. The chairman and the Mayor were appointed to represent the committee at the conference of patriotic committees in Taranaki, to be held at Stratford on Friday. A returned trooper, who receives his discharge to-day, waited 011 the committee and asked for assistance. He said he returned to New Plymouth 011 July 16, invalided home, and since then had received 5a a day from the Department. This would cease on his discharge. During his absence his wife had earned her living, but now she was broken down in health. The rent of his house had got somewhat behind, as also had the storekeeper's bill. The doctor had told him that he was absolutely unfit for work, and though he had written to the Pensions Board ten days ago he had not received a reply. After some discussion the chairman said a man was wanted to take charge of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society's fish hatchery, and the applicant could, have this position if the doctor approved of him doing the work. It was further decided to bring the case before the Minister in Charge of the Discharged Soldiers Department. The meeting was adjourned until next Tuesday at 4.30 p.m.
