PATRIOTIC WORK.

NEW PLYMOUTH COMMITTEE. A meeting of the New Plymouth Patriotic Committee was held yesterday. Present: Mr. J. E. Wilson (in the chair) and Messrs J. 'Paton, T. C. List, W. F. Brooking, H. Goodacre, C. Carter, F. C. J. Bellringer, C. H. Burgess, W. A. Collis, E. Griffiths, and the Rev. A. B. Chappell. The chairman reported on an application for assistance which he had inquired into. The applicant was a woman whose husband was in camp at Trentham, and on 37s a week (including allowance from the military authorities) she had to keep herself and nine young children. Two of the children ' were twins (which had been born since the husband went to Trentham) and the eldest child was only eleven years old. The chairman said he had given the applicant £2 for temporary assistance, and his action was confirmed. It was decided to pay the woman's rent, lis a week, for six months, this arrangement to be renewed then if necessary. Mr. J. Clarke waited on the committee on behalf of the Taranaki Carnival Queen Committee, and asked that Uie Patriotic Committee should not hold any big raffles in opposition to the carnival. He asked that the motor car donated to the Patriotic Committee by Mr. Newton King should be given to the Carnival Committee toi raffle. A sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs Wilson, Paton, and Carter, was appointed to wait on Mr. King with the Carnival Committee and go into the matter. This sub-committee was constituted a permanent committee to work with the Carnival Committee. It was decided to hold a public meeting for the purpose of electing a new committee and other business.
