KAPONGA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The sale of work in connection with St. John's Methodist Church was held in the Town Hall on Thursday last, October 21, and was opened by Mr. I). L. Astbury, who said that he did not intend giving a lengthy speech. He took his hearers back to the time when there was only one church in Kaponga. That was the Wesleyan one, but it was used by all denominations. He congratulated those who were responsible for having got together such a variety of articles, and trusted they would do good business. The following ladies had charge of the respective stalls:—Plain sewing: Mesdanies Signal, Davies, and Wickham; fancy: Meadames Blair and H. Wiekiham, and Misses A. Law and D. Williams; sweets, fruits, and flowers: Misses A. Collinge,. E. Law, 0. Swadling, 1 6. Swadling, E. Signal, and R. Signal; produce: Messrs L. Wickham, F. .Nicholson, and P. Harding. Me3dames Williams, Bates, and Holland, assisted by Misses M. Williams, Kime, and Signal, had charge of the refreshments, and Mr. A. 11. Thorns had charge of the competitions, j The following were the winners in the competitions:—Mrs. W. Holland (supper cloth), Misß E. Signal (Christmas cake), Mrs. R. Stevens (silver flower vase). | The fish pond was in charge of Mesdames Clarke and Buist, and the shooting gallery was controlled by Mr. H. Wickham. The nail driving for ladies was won by Miss G. Swadling, the prizeo being two fruit dishes. The bazaar was open in the afternoon and evening, being well attended in the afternoon, but rather poorly in the evening. The takings for the day were £SO. As there are a good many contributions i to come in, it is expected to make £oO net profit. All arrangements were carried out under the supervision of Rev. C. Blair, secretary. The various stalls .looked vary pretty and tempting. The | refreshments were provided by the ladies *nd were of their usual excellence*
