RUSSIA'S TASK.
CONSIDERABLE PROGRESS IN GALICIA. GERMAN ATTEMPT AT TERRORISM. Petrograd, Oct. 22. A communique states that our surprise attacks carried part of the enemy's positions in the Novo Alexinctz district northward of Tarnopol, also eastward of Lopuschno. Northward of Novo Alexinetz we captured during the day 148 officers, 7600 men, two howitzers, and a number of machine-guns. The Germans informed the people of Mitau that unless Riga was captured they would raze all the towns and villages in their line of retreat. Geneva, Oct. 22. The Germans, near Ekau, lost thirty kilometres of trenches. Their casualties were 18,000. The Russians in Eastern Galicia are advancing rapidly.
