Mr. Cecil Leys, associate editor of the Auckland Star, has volunteered for active service. He lieb been accepted as a member of the Automobile Corps. Mr. H. P. Woodward, manager of the Greyraoiith branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is about to retire on superannuation. He will be succeeded by Mr. Bevan, of Thames, A London cablegram reports the death of Sir Andrew Noble, an authority on explosives, who was a partner of the firm of Armstrongs at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Sir Andrew was 83 years of age.

A Gisborne telegram states that Private Edgar .Jones, son of Judge Jones, of the Xative Land Court, who enlisted in England, lias been dangerously wounded in France.

After the sale of his Manuka Islands station lie went Home for a trip, and on returning to Xew Zealand settled in Gisborne, where he died a few ,Ht« ago. ,
