NORTH TARANAKI RECRUITS. FORTY THREE DURING PAST ». ~,.!<. MANY MORE MEN WANTED During the past week forty-three men have enlisted at the New Plymouth Defence Office or at the recruiting office conducted by Mr. A. C, Gibson, in Brougham Street. This number comprises men from different parts of North Taranaki. Some of these recruits have been rejected as medically unfit and others have not yet been before the doctor. On past experience it is possible to estimate that only about 35 of this number will prove to be fit for service. For the Tenth Reinforcements Taranaki (which comprises the counties of Egmont, Taranaki, Olifton, Stratford, Eltham, Whangainomona, Waimate West, Hnwera, Patea, part of Wttitotara, Ohura, Waimarino, Kaitieke, and portions of West and East Taupo) is asked to provide 42."i men for all arms. It is impossible to say now how many men will be galled up from North taranaki for the Tenth Reinforcements, but as over 100 were taken for the Ninth, it may be considered that another 100 will 'in wanted. Arguing on these figures, the present position of recruiting in North Taranaki is as follows: Next Reinforcements .... The Tentht Go into camp November 10 Dominion total 3.500 North Taranaki's quota 100 Men already enrolled (about) .. 130 Recruits for past week ' 43 Days left to enlist '. 18 These figures show that that as far as the Tenth Reinforcements are concerned North Taranaki is keeping abreast of the position, but they also indicate that a considerable effort is required to main- . tain recruiting for future requirements. Recently there were 04 recruits in three weeks, now there have been 43 in one. week, and, gratifying as this is, it only represents, absolute requirements. As the table shows, it is estimated that there are about 130 men now enrolled and this number will be weakened after the doctor has given his verdict on all these men. Then, supposing 100 are call-. Ed up for the Tenth Reinforcements, nearly all the men enrolled will be abftorbd, and then the district will have to provide a further quota for "the Eleventh Reinforcements, to go into camp about the end of December. The position to-day is satUfactory, but every . fit man who can possibly do so should , come froward at once. < Many people still seem unaware ot the fact that we have reached a crisis. . In the ensuing twelve weeks the Do- ! minion lias to mobilise 13,500 men, i Where are they coming from? Dnncdin . has stated dearly that it is tired of [ begging for recruits. Canterbury is in- ; sistent that nothing but the establish- » t ment of local training camps will save : the situation there, and Wellington and ' Auckland are equally concerned with the » problem of finding men. Already polii ticians are talking of an early resummoning of Parliament to discuss the position. In the ensuing three months we arc to) recruit 20 per cent, of our remaining ' effectives. If a system of local eamp'i * - had bean in operation, we would probabl> . 1 have had a reserve of trained men wait- ' r ing to meet such a contingency as this.
