CROQUET.

NEW LAWN AT FITZROY OPENED. Yesterday afternoon the opening of the new croquet lawn in connection with the Fitzroy bowling green took place, there being a large gathering of ladiees present. The green, which was only laid down last winter, is of large extent, and, though still showing some weeds, had been brought into capital order for play, thanks to the indefatigable exertions of Mr. 0. Oxenham and others. Mr. Jackson, president of the bowling club, in a short address, thanked the ladies for their attendance and hoped that when their committee got to work a good, strong, and successful croquet club would popularise the game, and help to the success of the bowling club, but he warned the ladies that it would be wise on their part to cease play not later than 5.30 p.m. so as to avoid upsetting domestic matters. Mrs. Abbott, on being calledlipon, started play amid the cheers of all present, and a capital time was spent by the devotees of the game, the lawn playing well. Afternoon tea contributed to the pleasure of the players and their friends. This new addition to the recreative attractions of the district should be well patronised, as the conMtions under which play will take place are particularly attractive.
