BOWLING.

FITZROY GREEN OPENING, The formal opcniug of the Fitzroy Club green took place yesterday under favorable weathor conditions, anil in the presence of a large number of visitors, the ladies attending in strong force. Although the recent rain storm 3 prevented tile green from being as keen as could bo wished, it played remarkably well and true, thereby giving evidence of the careful treatment it had received at hands of the green-warden, Mr. S. Smith, and of the caretaker, Mr. Ward. The president, Mr. F. Jackson, briefly welcomed the visitors and thanked the ladies for their attendance, adding that he hoped the visiting bowlers would have an enjoyable game. Mr. M. Fraser, president of the New Plymouth Club, expressed his appreciation of the cordial jvelcome tendered to the visitors, and for The generosity of the Fitzroy Club in inviting the town players to use the green for practice earlier in the season before their own green was available. He wished the Club an enjoyable and successful season, and concluded by tendering a hearty invitation to the opening of the towa green on Thursday week. On behalf of the West End Club, Mr. Beal also thanked the president for his words of welcome, and expressed the hope that his Club would be favored with the presence of Fitzroy players when the West End green was opened. Miss Jackson then, amid cheers, threw the jack, and the green was declared open. - - ■■* The match between the president's and vice-president's teams was !!•<"• proceeded with, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent, the pleasure being greatly enhanced by afternoon tea served by the ladies.
