Smith proposed to withdraw from the Mayoral elections, but when questioned by a News reporter Mr. Smith gave the rumor an emphatic denial. He snid he had never entertained any intention of withdrawing, and he proposed to address the electors next Monday or Tuesday. Mr. G. \Y. Browne, >who has hc-ni freely mentioned as a probable candidate, stated yesterday that it is not his intention to come out. It appears that Mr. ('. H. Burgess and Mr. S. G. Smith will be the 1 only gentlemen to contest the election. For the vacancy on tho Council caused by the resignation of Mr. S. J. Smith, there was a desire that Mr. R. .1. Kihby should offer his services, but Mr. Kihby has definitely declined to accept nomination. It is probable that Mr. ,1. R. Hill will be asked to come forward. Mr. Hill is a member of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and was for many years on tho Taranaki County Council. The nominations of candidates for the Mayoralty and for the vacancy on the Council close next Wednesday, mid the elections will be held on November '■).
