RED CROSS DAY.
AID THE SUFFERING. COLLECTIONS IN NEW PLYMOUHK TO-MORROW. To-morrow is Red Cross Day at New Plymouth, when a collection will , to made to meet the growing demand 1 lor funds for Red Cross requirement*, both in France and the Near East. Collections for this object were made throughout the British Empire vested day, hut as Thursday is not a suitable day for collections in New Plymouth the people of this town will have the opportunity of helping to-morrow. It is hoped New Plymouth will make a splendid reply to this appeal, for everyone should remember that in swelling the funds of the Red Cross they are assisting one of the most (necessary organisations for isuoemfully waging the war. When a collection was recently made here, on behalf of the first New Zealand hospital ship, nearly £3OO was 6btained, and, gratifying as this result was, it should be everyone's desire to see this eclipsed to-morrow. That the women of No' Plymouth desire to give valuable help was evidenced yesterday afternoon, when a meeting was held at the Town Hall to arrange for collectors. The DeputyMayor (Mr. W. A. Collis), presided over an attendance of about fifty ladies, and Mrs. Doekrill (secretary of SI. John Ambulance Association), was also present. A list of from sixty to seventy ladies who will collect was drawn .ip, and the following wore appointed different localities in which to me ke a house to house collection: Mesdames M. Armstrong, Duff, Blaeklcy, W. Ambury, Gray, Bcvan, Wadsworth, G. W. Browne, Alien P. Veal, Monk and Misses Gideon, Warren, D. Bradbury, Goldwnter, Proudfoot, Pelhnm, Ward, Wade, Crooke, Greatbaeh, Riley, W. .Sole, Jackson, 0. Maekav, Hunter, F. Bavlv, Collis, M. Corkill, Billiard, W. Webster, Doris Roy, Ambury, Wilson (2), Ingley (2), Pellew, Kindberg (2), Browne, Sallantyne, MoGahey, Gibson, Colaon, Lee, Healy, Way, and Harkor. Many other ladies whoso name* are not at present available will also collect in the town. 'Messrs .1. 11. Pntou, W. Bowley, N. T. Maunder and IWaldie have kindly offered the. use of their motorcars to lady collectors. The collectors will start at nine o'clock to-morrow morning, and will continue thvir scif-imuoscd duties until nine o'clock at night. The Citizen's Band will play in the town in the nfternoon and evening. Mrs. Doekrill is in charge of all the arrangements, and she will be at the Mayor's room, at the Town Hall, all day.

Kins George, in a letter, expresses his satisfaction at the splendid work achieved by the Red Cross and St. .Tolm organisations, 'to which wounded soldiers have personally testified. His Majesty sent a cheoue for 11 vc hundred pounds with the letter. Queen Mary and Queen Alexandria have issued a message commending tomorrow'* Red Cross collection to the people of the Empire and express their gratitude IV the past generous assistance. The Red Cross Society and Order oi St. John are combining on Thursday. Ten thousand ladies are engaged in a collecting campaign, entitled, "Our Day Fond.'' '
