Sapper L. C. Gilbert., late of the Hawera loco, department, has been on a visit to his parent* lit Hurworth, and left for Trentham on Monday. # Lieut. C. C. Gilbert, of New Plymouth, is now convalescent in Izard's convalescent home, Upper Hutt, recovering from illness. A Hawkea Bay soldier, in a letter just received by his people, states that Colonel Malone was killed in the trenches at Gallipoli by shrapnel fired by one of our own vessels, not by the Turks. The Otago University Council has appointed Mr. H. I). Bedford professor of economies and history, at a salary of £7OO per annum. Corporal Cyril C. Bassett, Auckland's Victorian Cross hero, is -23 years old. and is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Bnesett, of Mount Eden. He was a member of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank when war broke out. On one occasion young Bassett found two armed burglars attempting to open the bank safe. He pluekily tried to hold up the intruders, and failed for help. He succeeded in preserving intact the hank property, but the burglars escaped. His conduct was greatly appreciated by the hank officials. At Wellington on Tuesday the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward presented to Sergeant T. E. Y. Scddon, M.l\, a pair of prismatic field glasses from the members of the Liberal Party in the House. In making the presentation, Sir Joseph Ward said he felt sure that Sergeant Seddon's action would be a stimulant in inducing many more young men to join the colors. In acknowledging the present, Sergeant Scddon said it was always hard to part with old friends, but he considered it his duty to join the force!, and he was proud of the fact that he was going out with a fine body of men who would do all in their power to uphold the prestige of New Zealand and the Empire in their hour of need.
