; OKATO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Quite an enjoyable and instructive afternon was spent at the Royal Arms Cheese Factory Puniho Road, last week, by a party from Okato. The factory, which is owned and run by Mr. Neilson, is quite a model one, and the product (cheese), looks just as good as it tastes. It is not with the idea, however, of giving, the. proprietor and his cheese a cheap advertisement that your correspondent is now penning these lines. The advertisement that ia wanted is that some of the particular cheese put through that afternoon will be available to New 'Plymouth through the Red Cross Mart in just four weekß' time. Messrs Corhett and Neilson have each donated a crate of cheese to the fund, and cash donations have since been received. The result is that 62 coins were placed in these cheeses before they were put into the cheese press. Your correspondent was there, and can vouch for the money being in the! cheese, which should find a ready sale at the mart, thus helping a worthy cause as well as causing some speculation as to the value of tbe bullion contained in each purchase. The coins ranged from half-sovereigns (2) to three-penny pieces, and are well distributed through the cheese. Messrs. Corbett and Neilson deserve, credit for their generosity, and the six cheeses should net a good return to the Red Cross Mart's fund.
KAPONGA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The faTewell social, given by the Catholics of Kaponga to Privates Murphy and Sullivan was a great success. In spite of the busy season the number of friends presents showed the popularity of the lads. Mr. McCarthy played for the various dances, while Mr. Bere was M.O. The stage, which was decorated with evergreens and lilies was a cosy nook for non-daneers. ?,rr. Lyall favored us with one of his popular songs, as also did Mr. If. Brlggs. During the evening, several speeches and presentations were made to ''our boys." Rev. Father Caliill, in a few words, expressed his sympathy with the great cause, and, on behalf of the congregation, presented them- with sleeping bags; and also a soldier's companion to Private Sullivan from the choir, of which he had been a member. Mr. Betts also spoke of the great necessity of other boys enlisting as soon as possible, and on behalf of the Patriotic Committee presented each trooper with a wristlet watch. Mr. McCormick, on behalf of the Hibernians, presented both with a safety razor and a prayer book. Mr. Ward, our local postmaster, spoke highly of IPrivate Pat Sullivan, commending him for hia straightforward manner us a cadet in the Kaponga Post Office. The guests of the evening suitably responded, thanking their many friends for tiie good wishes and presents', after which all joined in "For Thev are Jolly Good Fellows." The boys left for Trentham next morning. The Kaponga Brass Band gave an open-air concert on Saturday evening, which was greatly appreciated, and we trust t 0 see them out more 'often in the future, as it certainly makes the town much more lively. Mr. J. Cardner, of Riverlea, has received word from his son, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, that he is in hospital at Alexandria, and is doing well. The friends of Mrs. R.'t. B. Mellow will be sorry to learn that she is laid up with a poisoned hand, which was operated on a few days ago, but we trust she will soon be restored to health and strength again shortly.
