SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The acceptances received ror tke Waverley-Waitotara annual meeting are yefy fine, and give promise of interesting racing on Labor Day. The majority of the horses engaged hail from this province, and no doubt there will be a big sprinkling of Taranajd sports at Wavcrley on that day. ' The Cup has drawn ten horses, Rew'i Poto, Avon Park, Bold Stroke, and Lady Amai, being reserved for shorter events. The field includes Wild Lupin, lmarose, Katana, iPatronale, Welcome Nuggett, Tangiwai, and others, and if lmarose and Tangiwai go to the post they should have plenty of followers. A high-class field of. thirteen remains in the Brewer Handicap, including Rewi Poto, Tree Lucerne, Avon Park, Astor and Denise Urme. The race looks very open, though Denise Orme is voted a mdral by Wangahui-ites, and others have a fancy for Tree Lucerne audi Astor. The trio mentioned have betm showing fine form on the tracks. Welcome Nugget holds down top-weight in the Mournahaki Handicap, but over a mile he will have his work cut out to beat Lady Amai, the latter being in receipt of 71bs. Ten hold their ground, but scratchings may account for one or two on the day. Master Lupin's withdrawal from the Hurdles makes the issue appear more open, and of the nine remaining in St. Gate and Rgapofo appear to be in a class of their own. Both horses have won recently, and the publie may find it hard to separate them. No doubt Wanganui will go solid for Mr. "Billy" Tuck's horse. Tirana and Henry Clay have dropped out of the Flying Handicap, and out of the eleven still in King Chiara, Combustion, and Depredation are all nicely treated. The Jackson Stakes—always & good drawing card—has closed with acceptance of twenty. Bivouac, Tiora and Fidelio are likely to be well backed. The minor events have also drawn a fine entry. General entries for the Auckland spring meeting show that Taranafcl threatens to he well represented at that gathering. Amongst the entries are Tree Lucerne, Glenroy, Play-Off, Astor, Fidelio, Rewi Poto, Depredation, Crawford, Ngapoto, Expedition and Calais. Warstep has hardened for the New Zealand Cup, and Rinaldo, on the strength of his Masterton victory has also come into favor. Indigo, John Barleycorn, Black All, and Snub are most respected of the others. Sunbird has receded to a long price,, as has Maniaroa, and the layers apparently consider them unlikely runners. The Stewards' Handicap is reckoned to be between Chafcwana, Croesus, Downham, First Glance, Tete-a-tete, and Three. ■ What has become of Desert Gold, Nones and Co.? r
