SEMI CO-OPERATION.
NEW CHEESE FACTORY AT BARRETT ROAD. The wonderful productivity of Taranaki is evidenced by the number of butter and cheese factories that have been erected during the past few years, and are still being erected each year. Indeed, there is scarcely a by-road that has not one or more factories or creameries at work on it. One of the latest roads to be provided with these wealth •producers is the Barrett Road, where, on a fine site overlooking the wellknown Barrett Lagoon, Mr. C. I. Shrimpton, of the Royal Oak factory, has erected a two-vat branch factory. Mr. Shrimpton works on what is known as the semi-co-operative principle. That is a proprietary concern, with a committee appointed by the suppliers to look after their own interests. That this is working satisfactorily is evidenced from the fact that Mr. Shrimpton now has three factories in the immediate neighbourhood, viz., Hurford Road, Omata, and Barrett Road. This last factory is a very compact structure. The foundations are of concrete, and the walls are of corrugated iron. The curing room is 25ft by 24ft, and is fitted with the latest appliances. The engine-room is 10ft by 20ft, and contains a 10 h.p. Murray's tubular boiler, and 4 h.p. Tangye's engine. The whey vats, of 1600 gallon capacity, are elevated, the whey being lifted by an ejector and at the same time being pasteurised. The building was expeditiously erected by day labor, under the supervision of Mr. S. Vickers, whilst Mr. Shrimpton installed the machinery. The factory, which is to be opened to-day, will probably handle the milk of 450 to 500 cows the first season, but this is capable of considerable increase. Mr. G. KeHrney will have charge of the branch.
