CONDUCT OF THE WAR.
BRITAIN'S LAXITY.
HER STRANGE POLICY. '. Received Oct 17, 3 p.m. London, Oct. IS. The Manchester Guardian, commenting £» Sir Edward Grey's statement, eaya:—'.'The Government should have known years ago that Turkey might be a dangerous enemy. All that time we were deliberately keeping up the prestige of the Ottoman Empire, which was unfair to Russia and of advantage to Germany at the expense of British naval power. Doesn't it show a strange lack of co-ordination in our national policy and strategy? Regarding Bulgaria, the beat of'all answers to King Ferdinand would snrely have been to concentrate an overwhelming force at the Dardanelles, ,but this has been a costly and, we fear'we must add, an unsuccessful experiment." SME COSTLY DARDANELLES. (■ JTSPOKEN NEWSPAPER OPINION. " Received Oct 17, 3.10 p.m. J ■. ' ' London, Oct. 16. Evening newspapers are commenting freely on the situation at the Dardanelles. • - .. ■« The Westminster Gazette considers that the Government should not be pressed respecting the situation. If the House of Commons refrains from pursuing a line of inquiry it will show itself more prudent than the House of Lords. The Westminster Gazette suggests equipping a new expedition for Salonika, but it must'not be allowed to dissipate or weaken the forces in the Wert, which is the decisive theatre of the, war. ' The Evening News draws attention to the discrepancy between Mr. Churchill's a&d Lord Cecil's optimistic statements •bout the Dardanelles and the illusions of the House of Lords .
