STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Saturday. The Dardanelles Market was again a great success. It was plentifully supplied with dressed poultry, cookery, vegetables, and dairy produce. The ladies had a very busy day, and a good sum should result. At His Majesty's Theatre last evening a comic singing competition was held, Mr. J. Rowe proving the winner. He was presented with a gold medal. Twenty-four men leave here on Monday night for Trentham Training Camp. They will fall in at the school and march to the Post Office, where his Worship the Mayor will farewell them. They will then be given a quarter of an hour to say good-bye to their friends, and will parade again and march to the station. The station gates will be open on this occasion, so that the general public will have nothing to complain about on this score. It is hoped that the town will display bunting and that shopkeepers will light their premises up, so that this farewell will be of a bright character, and that the town will not be in semi-darkness, as on previous occasions. Mr. Hornsby, M.P., will give a recruiting address at Whangamomona on Tuesday night. Messrs Kirkwood and McMillan will accompany the * speaker to Whangamomona. It is a pity an effort has not been made to induce Mr. Hornsby to give another recruiting address in the Town Hall here on Wednesday. He is certainly worth listening to, and if it could be arranged a packed audience is certain. It is not too late to makearrangements. Advice was received to-day that Private Barker, of Cardiff, is returning with the troopships which are expected at the end of March. Mr. Geo. Smith, of Midhirst, met with a painful accident a few days ago. Mr. Smith had caught liis horse and was leading it along when the animal attempted to break away, with the result that one of Mr. Smith's fingers were broken,, At a special meeting of the Borough Council, held last evening, it was decided to instruct the Borough solicitor to draft the agreement between the Council and the Electrical Supply Company for the purchase of the Company's undertaking by the Council, and to return the draft after completion to the Council for their perusal. There was a fair attendance of players on the bowling green this afternoon, and some enjoyable matches were played. It is the intention of the club to have inter-club matches played by the Saturday players, and this should be an inducement for those who have Saturday for their half-holidays to join the Club. . ,»
