RUSSIA.

RUSSIAN SUCCESSES. DRIVING BACK THE ENEMY. Received Oct. 13, 11.35 p.m. Petrograd, Oct. 13. A communique states: There is desperate fighting near Dvinsk. The Germans occupied a portion of our trenches to the north-westward, toward Illuksi, but our artillery near Lautzehhia, dispersing the Germans, forced the abandonment of their, trenches and the village of Jorjok, southward of Lake 'Demmdn. We, at dawn, under cover of the fog and not firing a shot, captured three lines of trenches at the southern end of Lake Demmet. We crossed the 'River Prorua and captured three villages. The Germans, southward of Pinsk, were dislodged by the bayonet at Komora and fled in disorder, our machine-guns inflicting heavy loss. Our troops at /Haivornke, westward of Trembowla, forced the enemy's last line and occupied two more trenches. They stormed a stronghold on a height eastward of Haivornke, comprising a system of covered trenches, loopholed and protected by steel plates. A strong counter-attack was repulsed. We forced the enemy's line at Mount Moya, in the vicinity of Haivornke capturing a whole Austrian battalion.' The enemy were completely defeated, retiring in disorder beyond the" Strypa, being pursued closely. We later crossed the Strypa, our cavalry sabring many of the enemy, and captured a convoy, four guns and ten machine-guns. ON YHE GALICIAN FRONT. A SMALL SUCCESS. Petrograd, Oct. 12. He Russians pierced the AustroGerman lines on the Strypa river and have taken over 2000 prisoners. IN THE BALTIC PROVINCES. i ' DISTRIBUTION OF FORCES. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) Petrograd, Oct. 12. ! The Russky Invalid points out that 350,000 of the enemy's bayonets and •abra are concentrated on the Riga-Drinak-Vilna front. These include twelve divisions with General von BuJow on the left bank of the Dwjna, between Riga and Dvinsk; fifteen divisions under General von Eichorn in the region Vilna-Sventaiany, and fifteen divisions in the region of Dvinsk. We may deduct five divisions from von Bulow to cover the section of the Dwina between Riga and Jakobstadt. General von Eichorn is unalble to divert above one-third of his forces for operations against the Dvinsk fortified positions. I'his leaves a total of 32 divisions. Artillery battles are a chronic feature of this front, and the Russians are evidently superior.
