Following is the High Commissioner's cablegram, under date October 2 (Note: Quotations', unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): Meat. —Better demand for mutton, owing to there being leas chilled beef and the colder weather, but no change in prices.

Mutton.—Canterbury 'i'%d for light weight, heavy- weight 7d, other New Zealand brands of mutton cannot be quoted; ewes 3%d to 6d. Lamb.—There is no alteration in the lamb market since last week. Good de. inand continues: Canterbury sy B d, heavy weight 7y,d, second-class quality light weight 7%d, other New Zealand brands ot lamb B'/ s d for best quality light weight, ordinary quality 7 13-16 d. Beef.—Only very low quality cow beef is available, hinds Od. forces 3d; chilled hinds By a d, fores o%d. Butter.—The market is firm for be3t quality. Danish, quiet, 192s to 2025; .Siberian, in brisk demand for finest, low grade quiet, 136s to 1425; Irish creamery, ]7os to 180s.

Cheese.—The market is quiet and prices are slightly weaker with only moderate demand. During this week Canadian white brought 7<!s, colored 775; New Zealand white 755, colored 775; English Cheddar and Cheshire, firm 94s to 965; United States 72s to 745, fair to good quality 00s to 70s. Canadian and United States cheese stocks at London, Liverpool and Bristol on October 1 were 313,000 boxes, against 169,000 boxes last year. New Zealand and Australian cheese stocks at London and Bristol were 11,200 crates, against 2250 crates last year. Hemp.—The market is firm, hut little doi'ng. Manila new graded, fair on spelt October-December shipment £3B 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 23,000 bales.

Wheat.—The market is firmer on account of short coverings and better demand from millers. Canadian new crop, September-November shipment, 47s 9d; American August-September shipment, 49s 6d

Oats.—The market is firm on account of the War Office buying Argentine on spot at 31s. October-December shipment, 29a 6d.

PeaS.—Rather more inquiry. New Zealand maples about 63s for September shipment.
