Fourteen destroyers, divided in parallel lines, protected the The destroyers alternately steamed Blowly up stream and drifted back again. The night was very dark. The lookout on the Goliath towards midnight thought lie noticed eight destroyers in one lino instead of seven. Then a torpedo struck the ship. It appears that a Turkish destroyer, manned by Germans, slipped into the British line of destroyers and awaited the moment to torpedo the Goliath at 500 yards.
