BUTTER AND CHEESE.

OPENING OP EXPORT SEASON.

A BIG TARANAKI SHIPMENT

The first big shipment from Taronakf of the new season's butter and cheese was to have been made from New Plymouth yesterday, hut as the Oorinna. lias a full cargo of produce to take fro» Onehunga to Wellington, she will not take the Taraiuiki Shipment until Friday. At Wellington the Corinmi will tranship the produce to the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer RimutaJca, which leaves Wellington for Loudon next Tuesday. The produce to be sent from Tiranalri will comprise 15,169 boxes of butter and 3650 crates of cheese, and represents the tot important shipment of the season, though 2071 'boxes of butter were sent from Taranaki on September 4 and were taken Home by the I?o----torua.

Oompaled with the first export* at the opening of the season titia time last year, the feature about this year'* initial shipment is an increase in the amount of butter going forward and a decrease in the shipments of cheese. Including the butter sent by tne Riotorua, the first sJupmeat tab) year shows a total of 17,230 boxea of butter, while the quantity snipped this time last year was 15,380 boxes—an increase this year of 1850 boxes. Last year 1050 crates of cheese were sent on October fi and a few days later (1052 orates were shipped, compared with 3050 crates to be shipped on Friday. The difference was mentioned to a New Plymouth produce merchant yesterday by a News reporter, and the merchant stated toe explanation was that the high price now ruling for butter had induced many fac tones to continue making butter longer than usual, and so causing a decreas" in. the quantity of cheese being manufactured.

Tike shipment leaving here on Friday is a valuable one. It is anticipated that the butter will realise £3 10s a box on the London market, thus making tbe butter shipment of 15,150 boxee of the value of £53,050 10s. Cheese, it is considered, will 'be worth at least £4 a crate, the shipment of .1050 crates being therefore worth .C 14,000. After this week regular shipments of produce will | be made from New Plymouth every fort* nighrt throughout the season.

CHEESE FOR THE ARMY. Vfiiw. referring to tiiie action of th» Government in commandeering meat, and tiho results attending the system, the Prime Minister hinted at an interesting possibility with regard to the export M cheese. "Is there any possibility of Government commandeering dairy ■ produce in New Zealand?" Mr. Massiv v»» asked. "I cannot, say definitely'" f e Prime Minister replied, <- tiut communications are passing between the New Zealand Government and the Imperial Government in regard to the supply of cheese for the Imperial Army. I will say that it is possible that some arrangement will be made by which the Government will take over' our production of cheese in the same way that meat was taken over."
