Surgeon-Major G. Home, of New Plymouth, who ha sheen invalided to England, arrived there on Satunlay. At an adjourned- special meeting of the: Waimate West County Council on Saturday evening, Mr. J. A. , Hansen, of Eltham, was appointed engineer. Mr. A. J. Heron, of Wellington, has taken Mr. H. J. Thompson's place as teacher on the Stratford school. Mr. J. Masters, of Stratford, has received a cable informing him that his son, Sapper Harold Masters, who was reported wounded, is returning to New Zealand.
Mr. C. T. Foley, of Ohtistchurch, has taken the place of Mr. A. C. Hunter (who has left for the front), at the National Bank, Stratford. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, of Stratford, received a cable this morning announcing the fact that his brother, Major J. G. Kirkwood, has heeu wounded somewhere in France.
Mrs. A. Simons, Tariki, has received an official telegram notifying her that her son, (Private A. Simons, who is in hospital at Alexandria, is progressing favorably. Mr. Thomas Redraond, eldest son of Mr. John Redmond, postmaster at To Aro, lias been appointed postmaster and rsgistrai- of marriages, births, and deaths at Whangamomona. Lieut. K. Munvo, son of Mr. J. Munro, for many years manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Patea, has been admitted to the Royal Free Hospital. London, where he is mating good progress towards veeovevy from wounds received at the Dardanelles.
Mrs. Blamires on Saturday received tiie following cable from Chaplain-Cap-tain Blamires at Alexandria: Slight operation, successful.—No t information has been received concerning the cause or nature of the operation. The last message received from Mr. Blamires was that lii' was going to the Dardanelles to take the place of Chaplain-Major Luxford.
The death occurred at Brighton, ICnglaiul. on August Ist last ofMr. James Hughes, who formerly carried on the business of printer and lithographer on the present site of Messrs. Harcourt and Co.'s oflicos on Lambtnn Quay. The late Mr. Hughes was a well-known figure on the "Quay" some forty years ago. Retiring from business, lie took up farming in the Taranalci district, after which he visited the Argentine, and finally settled down in TCngalnd. He is survived by a widow, two soars, and a daughter. all of whom are resident in England. He had readied the advanced age of Sfi. Lance-Corporal Xatzke. who is reported as having died of wounds at Anssa-.-, was well-known in the Stratford district. Mr. \\*. T. Bailey, of the \Yw Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's l'itham staff, met with a painful accident in llawcra. on Saturday morning. lb- was assisting to yard horses for the horse fair, and in endeavoring to iin n back a. beast near Mr. Potter's Private Hotel, the horse he was riding -lipped upon the tarred roadway, and the lidcr was thrown heavily to the srniin;). Mr. Bailey was taken into the private hotel, where he was attended to by Or. Thomson, and when it was found that he bad sustained a dislocation of a sinew in the leg. The sufferer was afterwards taken to his lioino at Kltham in a motor-car. ft will be a few weeks before be will be able to resume his duties.
