Mr. 8. J. Ambury has been appointed chairman of directors of the Auckland 'Farmers' Freezing Company. Surgeon-Captain Geo. Home, recently with the New Zealand forces at Ga%oll, who has been invalided to England, hj» been promoted to Major. Advice has been received that Quarter-master-Captain W, J, Shepherd, who left New (Plymouth with the Main Expeditionary body is dangerously ill in London.
Mr, J. C, Evison, who has been headmaster of the Bell Block Bchool for the past eighteen months, leaves oil Friday for Niue, Cook Islands, where he baa received an appointment as headmaster of the native school.
The ordination of Mr. A. H. Norrie as Presbyterian Missionary tobk place in the Whangainomona Hall on the evening of the 21st lixst. The Moderator of the district, Rev. J. Pattison, of Stratford, presided. He was supported on the platform by Rev. J. Lowery, of Eltham, and Mr. Lillcy, elder, of Stratford. Mr. H. G. Stringer, secretary of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, Ltd., who has been appointed secretary at Feilding of the Oroua and West Coast Frozen Meat Company, was voted the sum of £IOO at the annual meeting of the Auckland Company a day or two ago in recognition of his valuable services during the past 11 years. Lance-Corporal E. T. Baxter, whose, name appeared, in yesterday morning's list as having been killed at the Dardanelles, was a grandson of Mrs, Treeby, of New Plymouth. He enlisted from Marton with the first expeditionary force. Two younger brothers arc also at the front, Ronald, fightin" with the .Canadians in France, and Willie, who left with the Sixth Contingent.
The death occurred on Monday afternoon of a very old settler of Masterton, in the person of Mrs. Percy, relict of thij late Heniy James Percy, of Masterton. Deceased, who was seventy-seven years of age went to the Wairarapa in the early days with her husband. The late Mrs, Percy went to reside on a farm at Te Ore Ore, but on the death of her husband she removed to Masterton to live. She leaves a large family, comprising five sons (Alfred, Oswald, Joseph, Frank and William), and tnree daughters (Mrs. C. L. Spencer, of Hawke's Bay, Mrs. I:. R Richards, of Hawke's Bay, and Mrs. R, J. Smith, of Masterton). Mr. G, H. Hutt-ni, manager of the Oliura branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is under orders to proceed to Inglewood. The local paper states that during his long stay in the Ohura district. Mr. Button has interested himself in all things of social interest, and his suave and kindly disposition wili provide him with many friends wherever lie may be. At the close of the weekly united choir practice, a presentation, as a slight token of respect and esteem waa made to Mr. G. 11, Button, leader of the choir. Dr. Dunk voiced the regret felt at the losing of Mr. Hutton, and also spoke of the in*? the work of the churejl generally would experience. Mr. Hutton replied in feclinif terms.
