FOR THE FRONT.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS TOR TAHANAKI MEN. THE MAYOR'S APPEAL FOR HELP. Everyone k asked to assist to brighten the Christmas of the Taianaki soldiers at the front, and can do so by sending a subscription, small or large, to the Mayor's fund to-day. It is important that contributions should be made early, for it is proposed to close the fund next Monday, so that the Christtfiaa presents can be bought and packed early next week. The more money that is received the happier will be the Taranaki men when they undergo the unique experience of spending Christmas in the trenches. The sum of £8 has been forwarded to the Daily News, while a farther £5 has been collected by Mir. W. J. Chancy, who is acting as treasurer of the food on behalf of tits Mayor. Mr, Chancy at'tends at as office next to Means W. J. "Shaw and Co., in Brougham street, every afternoon between two and three o'clock and those who desire to subscribe to the fnml should send their contributions to him or to the Daily Kew». In conversation with a News reporter yesterday the Mayor said that he appreciated the generosity that had been shown by the people whenever an appeal been made to help the soldiers, and lie hoped that the next few days would see the same spirit reviewed and enough money would come in to provide generous Christmas hampers for the soldiers. Mr. Wilson said that on all sides he had heard how greatly the men appreciated cigarettes, and so it was proposed to make cigarettes the principal item in the hampers. Sweets were s3so appreciated and would lie sent, while Jie had also learned that knives, scissors and general cutlery would be greatly welcomed. A good amount of money has already been given to the fund, 'but Mr. Wilson emphasised that he could not have too much, and he hoped the public would readily respond to such a worthy appeal.

Arrangements are being made to hold a sacred concert in the Theatre Eoyal on Sunday night, the net proceeds of which will go to the fund.
