DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Although the weather was wet on the 23rd inst., the Taraki ladies bravely faced the elements, and there was a large number at the Red Cross tea given by Mrs. Stephenson, a very pleasant afternoon being spent. Mesdames Hoskins, Gernhoffer, Jamison, Long, Stephenson, and Miss Richardson contributed Bongs, and Mrs. W. L. F. Porter a recitation. The receipts, including contributions sent from those unable to attend, amounted to nearly £3, and were expended in the purchase of materials for. the sewing guild to make up for the hospital ship. Mr. J. W. Boon, of Stratford, has just completed a 60 ton silo for Mr. D. Swanson. This is the first of its kind in the district. The silo is circular, about 14ft. diameter, built of reinforced concrete cut injp a bank, the top being about sft. above the level of the roadway, with a doorway for filling, wfiich reduces lifting to a minimum. Mr. Swanson has a fine 4 acre paddock of lucerne adjacent, and intends making it and other green crops into ensilage. Messrs D. Kendrick and R. W. Thompson have received notice to attend camp in October, and Beveral other of our boys are answering to the bugle call, and I hear that enrolled amongst them are Messrs Len. Smith and C. Thomson.
Mr. L. W. F. Porter, who is at present on leave of absence from Trentham, is spending a few days on bis farm on Mangotea Road. Mr. Porter, who is looking very fit, speaks highly of the conditions at the catap, and also of the officers in command, whom he considered a fine lot.
