Mr. Hueh Baily, of New Plymouth, received a further cable yesterday elating that the condition of his son, Private Ronald Baily, continues to be satisfactory.

Trooper Percy Turner, killed ht U* Dardanelles, was the only son of Mr, P. C. Turner, Mayor of Eketahuna. Ha was thirty years of age, and wai educated at Wellington College.

A resolution of sympathy with Mr. and Mr. T. Q. Sole in the death in action of their son, Sergeant E. Sole, wa« passed at the annual meeting of the TJ«w Plymouth Defence Rifle Club lait night. Srgeant Sole was a prominent member of the Club.

Mr. E. N. Webb, who was a member of Dr. Mawson's scientific staff on hie expedition to the south, has joined the Reinforcements, his work on the Antarctic records having kept him in Chrlstchurch up to the present.

Mr. W. J. Bladder, of the .Vaieby Magistrate's Court, took up his duties at the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday, in place of Mr. E. W. Rhodes, who has been transferred to Wellington. Mr. Rhodes leava for Wellington on Monday.

The death occurred on Monday at Auckland of Captain J. Robertson, a well-known figure in shipping circles all over the Dominion. Captain Robertson retired from active life some few years ago, having been then in command o? the Monowai. Previous to that he was for many years in charge of the Rotoiti. The death is announced from Dunedin of Mr. Leslie R. Wilson, of the firm of R. Wilson and Co., merchants. He had been in Napier for the past two months, and on his return to Dunedin a day or two ago he died on the train between Timaru and Oamaru. Mr. Wihjon'had been in indifferent health for several years. He left a Widow and one son. Major F. A. Field, of the Lands and Survey Department, has been appointed captain in the Mounted Rifles Reinforcements, and he will leave Auckland to take up his new duties on September 27. Major Field, who has seen service in Egypt, India, and South Africa, has Wn training the Parnell unit of the National Reserve.

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Cleary, has made good progress towards recovery from his illness. The following cablegram was received from Sydney to-day;—" There is a marked improvement in the Bishop's condtion; he leaves hospital to-day for the Archbishop's place at Manly."— Press Association.

News has been reecived in Masterton of the death at Russell, Bay of Islands of Mr. E. A. D. Whatman, brother of Mr. A. B. Whatman, of "Abbotsford" Masterton. The late Mr. E. H, D. What, man, who was 55 years of age, was 6 om« years ago a prominent footballer. He played for New Zealand against England at Wellington, where he had his leg broken. He was a keen angler and a good all-round sport, He had been tiling for somo time.

The death occurred at the Chatham Islands recently of Mr. Denis Murphy the oldest settler on the islands He was born in Ireland and was 91 years of age. After spending a number rj years in New Zealand he went to the Chatham*, where ho took up land for sheep-farming purposes, and resided there for fifty-one years. He served for many years under General Clint* and went through the Indian Mutiuv and Maori Wars. Mr. Murphy brought „ p . family of twelve children, seven of whom are still living on the Chatham ManCs. His vyife died thirteen years ago.
