OPUNAKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
SUCCESSFUL SPRING SHOW. Considering the early season and the fact that the climatic conditions at Opunake are not conducive to the culture of ' spring flowers, there was' an excellent i : play at the-spring flower show, which was held in the Opunake Town Hall, under the auspices of the Opunake Horticultural Society, on Wednesday. The show was very successful, though the Society, which holds a spring and autumn show each year, does not look to make any profit from the former. The display of bulbs and spring flowers was on the whole very creditable.' Pot plants were a strong class, the feature of the show being a magnificent asparagus plumosa, exhibited by Mrs. M. J. Brennan. There was some fine' work exhibited in the decorative classes. Cookery, though the entry was not'very large, was of excellent quality, the judge expressing himself as Very well pleased. Needle and fancy work produced strong competition, and some fine work was done in the patriotic section. Mrs. Jas. Young's exhibit of knitted socks, balaclavas, scarves, mittens, etc., was greatly admired. Mrs. McFie, an elderly lady of 72, had on exhibition a beautful piece of work in a pair of fine silk stockings that she had knitted during the past fomight. The childrens' section was particularly good, both in useful and fancy work. The school sections filled well, Opunake, Te Kiri and Opunake Convent being represented. A fine display of cut blooms was exhibited by Duncan and Davies and. the Morshead Nursery Co., New Plymouth, greatly adding to the attractiveness of the show. The committee all worked hard, and under the organisation of the capable secretary (Rev. 0. M. Stent) and his assistant (Mr. E. Marshall) everything went off like clockwork. Both in the afternoon and evening there was a very fair attendance, and the ladies in charge of the afternoon tea, Mesdames Chambers, Hammond, Markham, Misses Feaver, Malcolm and Stronge, were kept very busy. Sideshows, which were run for the Society by' Messrs J. P. Burton and C. Malcolm, also added to the .revenue. In the evening, a reciting competition was held, Mrs. Sylvester being judge. There were three competitors, and the result was that Moira Thompson ("The .Roll Call") and, Barbara Donnelly ("The Travelling Post Office") were bracketed equal for first place. At the conclusion of the show,' a number of the exhibits were auctioned by Mr. M. J. Brennan, and the proceeds (£4 17s 6d) will be devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.
