AUCKLAND QUEEN CARNIVAL.
THE ART UNION DIFFICULTY. , By Telegraph.—'Press Association. t- Auckland, Last Night. This afternoon the agitation against the element of speculation in connection with the Auckland Queen Carnival came to a head, when representatives of the Clergy and Ministers Association met the executive of the Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association, and presented a manifesto setting forth the views of those who are opposed to art unions. The manifesto stated, inter alia: "So far as we are aware the whole facts of the case and the greatness of the need have not yet been placed before the people, ] and until that has been done we have no right to make the reflection that they are so insensible to the tremendous sacrifices made on their behalf by our heroes at the front as to be unwilling to give generously and directly. We a;re fully aware of the seriousness of the position, and of the difficulty of the task laid upon your committee, but believing, as we do, that money can be raised by direct giving, we appeal to you to try a means which would unquestionably raise the national sentiment to a high level, as well as get the money required. Should your executive be prepared to give the method we suggest a fair trial we pledge ourselves do our very utmost by an earnest and united effort to secure success." The executive intimated that it would consider the matter.
