THE MINING CORPS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, September 20. The Tunnelling Company of Engineers, which is being raised by tlie Defence Department at the request of the Imperial Government, will probably go into camp at Avondale racecourse. The whole of the buildings and grounds have been placed at the disposal of the local authorities by the Avondale Jockey Club, and subject to approval of Major Talbot, the offer will be accepted. The authorities hope to have, by. the end of this week, a good idea of the number of men who are likely to offer their services. About 420 are wanted, half of whom will be skilled in tunnelling and driving, and the other hah' partially skilled, such as surfaceworkers. Coalminers will not be accepted. The officers of the corps will b.i qualified engineers. A number of men presented themselves for enlistment at the Drill Hall to-day.
WAR LEAGUE FORMED. Wellington, September 20. A well-attended public meeting decided to form a War League, the objects of which are "to expedite and extend the organisation of the people and resources of New Zealand for the purpose of taking our full share fn the defence of the Empire and tlie prosecution of the war, «ud to assist the Government in accomplishing these objects.'' It was also resolved to recommend to the Government that the National Register should ascertain the iiidividii.il wealth o[ the country, mid should includu women, oil liie bame basis as men; also that the age for military service should be extended beyond 40 so long as a volunteer can pass the test for fitness.
