NEWS AND NOTES.
OPitcairn Island, the borne of descendants of the srew of the Bounty, ■was visited by the cargo Steamer Norman Monarch whilst die was en route from New York to Wellington, via Panama Canal. Captain Watson navigated his vessel quite close to the island, and about half a dozen inhabitants, including two women, pulled out and went aboard the ship. In return for newspapers and •periodicals of various descriptions the crew of the Norman Monarch obtained fresh vegetables, fruit, and a number of chickens. Captain Watson reported that the health of the islanders had been good. They were very anxious for news of the war, although the (Port Curtiß, which arrived at Wellington from New York a few weeks ago, supplied the first news the Pitcaim Islanders had had for months. The opening of the Panama Canal has been a blessing to the inhabitants of Pitcairn Island, for since the great waterway 3ms been used by vessels trading from Eastern American I ports to New Zealand a call has frequently been made at their island home. Prior to this it was months and perhaps years before a vessel of any description visited the place. FOR KHEUMATiq SUFFERERS.

I want to call and see her as I pass through and tell her about Percy. ' He waa about the bravest kid that ever landed' on the Peninsula. A party of which he was a member had to retire from the trenches. He offered to stay (behind on his own, and give them covering fire so that they might retreat with more safety, or rather, less danger. He worked his rifle like a machine-gun, but in the end got two bullets in the head. He knew that he could not possibly get out alive, and yet. he volunteered to stay behind so that he could let the rest get away. Was there ever a braver deed? It was not done on the spur of the moment, but simply in cold blood, and he must have known, and I am sure did know, that he would never bcc New Zealand again.
