L,' Hewitt, the New Zealand jockey, has returned after an absence of years in Europe. TURF TOPICS. ' (By "Moturoa.") The Avondale spring meeting opens on Wednesday. Nones is galloping well at Wanganui. Arran has been added to the list and turned out. There seems little chance of i meeting at Trentham next month. Reputation's form on Saturday gave promise of better things later on. Warstep is a warm order for (he New Zealand Cup, but Snub may be the stable-elect on the day. Two Ashburton winners, Wishful and Week End, were backed all over the colony, but the dividends were microscopical. If Loyal Arch scores at- Avondale she will start a very warm order in the Wanganui Guineas next week. The Dannevirke Hunt meeting was got off in perfect' weather, and largely attended. The sum of £8332 was put through the mill—a very satisfactory turn-over. ' The riders in the Dannevirke Hunt Steeples wore mourning bands on their arms in respccst for the many good "sports" who have died gamely at Gallipoli. Roseblush, with W. Adams up, won the Hunters' Hurdles at Dannevirke very easily. The favorite, Kirkby, was never in the hunt. The Maiden Steeple was an exciting event. Master King led to the first fence and fell, Rexdale and The Hound running off. Chattis and Motokio were then left in front. Chattis fenced frightfully, and the crowd reckoned R. Gray must have had the glue pot with him* to have kept his seat. The superior pace of Chattis enabled him to win easily at the finish. Astrologer and Orienda carried the bullion in the Maiden Hack Race, but after leading to the turn this pair gave way to the aptly named Tribulation gelding Trials, who won with his head on his chest. , The public sorted out Lady Renown as a moral for the Dannevirke Hunt Steeple, and she won from flag-fall to "numbers up." Belvoir, who was half a mile behind the leaders early in the piece, was pulled up, and the "fltooards" administered a scolding to Jockey O'Connell for not continuing to risk his neck for nix! The Hack.Steeple was a duel between Nita and Merry Lad. After an interesting go, Nita was well beaten, and, to add insult to injury, failure to draw the weight saw her "distanced" for the race. Rexer's turn came in the Otawhao Hack Hurdles. Monologue, his most dangerous opponent, cracked every fence and finally spilled out heavily, leaving Rexer to run in an easy winner, from Golden Water and Lady Strowan. The man with the gun went out and looked severely at Monologue, but the injury proved to be nothing worse than a dislocated shoulder, and so the weapon was returned to its rack. The hot order, Sea Lord, tried to win the Makotuku Hack Handicap from barrier rise, but a brace of outsiders, Montana and Cherry Blossom appeared on the scene in the straight, and easily outed the favorite. Montana paid weil over the limit. Another surprise awaited punters in the Iviritaki Hunters' Flat Handicap, one of Tommy Clarke's charges, Kuropatangi, leading from the turn to the end. Then the punters, looking as mournful as the wind sobbing through a holo In your hat, made tracks for the train. Hunt meetings are great gatherings for "doing" money very "hard"! The 'Stralian Jockey Club committee allowed the appeal of Mr. C. McLaren, owner of Cheddar, who was disqualified for an unsatisfactory performance at Gosford (N.S.W.), but, at the same time, cast the cold, eye of disapproval on A. Rhodes (trainer) and W. Weiler (jockey). North-East was supposed to be the "pea" in this event, but got hung up in the tapes. All the same, it is hard luck to get biffed.right out for two years all on account of an uncertain performer like Cheddar. Mr. Geo. Morse has been appointed handieapper to the Masterton Racing Club, Hamilton (late Soufli Auckland) Racing Club, and Cambridge Hunt Club.
