AN ITALIAN SUCCESS. RENDERED INEFFECTIVE BY GAS. Rome, Sept. 12. A communique says: An Italian detachment, by a spirited bayonet attack, seized portion of the enemy trenches on the Santa Maria heights in the Tolmino sector, but owing to heavy artillery fire, asphyxiating gas bombs, and jets •of burning liquid, they returned to their 'own trenches. AUSTRIAN REPORT. Amsterdam, Sept. 10. An Austrian despatch says: We repulsed the Italians at Tolmino head with heavy losses. A hostile torpedoer torpedoed one of our torpedo- ; ers, which reached port with damaged ; bows.
