NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. THE MENS CHAMPIONSHIP. A. Bewley defeated F. S. Jolms in the final of the men's championship of the New Plymouth Club on Saturday, 'by 2 and 1 to play in a match of 36 holes. The match ended on the 35th green, and it is a coincidence that when these players last met in the final of the championship a few year 3 ago the match then also ended on the 35th green, A. 'Bewley being the winner by the same margin. On the whole, Saturday's match was not marked by brilliant golf, but hero and there some excellent holes were played. Johns gave indications of being the winner on several occasions. In the first round in the morning he was 3 up at the sixth, and though Bewley equalled matters, Johns again held an advantage at the 13th, where he was 2 up. The next four holes were halved, and Bewley won the 18th, leaving Johns 1 up at the end of the first round. Playing the first hole in the second round Bewley "foozled" his drive and was off the green'with 'his third, while Johns was on in 3. Johns missed a 4, and the hole was halved in 5. The next hole was also halved. At the 3rd, Bew-' ley pulled' his drive to the left of the green, while Johns put a pretty, straight ball on tho edge of the green. A good approach put Bewley in a handy position for "2, but he failed to hole his third, and as Johns found three strokes sufficient the players went to the 4th tee with Johns leading by 2 up. There were no special features about the 4th hole, where Bewley lost a half by a bad putt. Johns 3 up. At the Bth, Bewley pulled 'his drive into the paddock behind the hill, and Johns sent a straight drive well on the way. Bewley recovered with a splendid approach, which landed oi the green, while Johns took two shots to find the green and was then too far. Bewley went down in 4to Johns' 6. Johns, 2 up. The feature of the next hole was a brilliant 4 by Bewley, which gave Johns no chance. Johns, 1 up. At the 7th, Johns made a splendid recovery from the bunker on the left, but he lost his advantage by bad putting, and Bewley won the hole, and made the position all square. The Bth was halved, and Johns played 9th badly, and left Bewley 1 up at the turn. At the tenth, Bewley placed a good ball on the green, while Johns found the sand. Johns was not completely clear of the bunker with his second, while his third overran the hole. Bewley missed 3 and went out in 4, and Johns had bad luck in not halving, 'his putt striking the side of the hole and keeping up. Bewley, 2 up. Both played the nth well, Johns winning with a good 4, and both played the 12th badly, and halved it. Tlie 13th, 14th, and loth Were also halved, and the players faced the 16th with Bewley leading 1 up. Johns found the ground at the 16th, and Bewley with his iron, was short of the green. Johns just failed to sink his putt, and got a 3. Bewley made no mistake with a good putt for 3. Bewley now lead 1 up and 2to play. At the 17th, Johns drove a splendid ball well past the stones, while Bewley was straight but shorter with his cleek. Bewley got a good brassy away, while Johns struck his second with the heel of his club, and was still off the green with his third. When the pin was taken out, Bewley was a few inches off the hole and Johns was several feet away for the like. Johns went for the hole and missed, and Bewley putting out won the hole and the match by 2 up and 1 to play. Mr. R. Addenbrooke acted as umpire.
