SPORTING.

TORF TOPICS.

(By "Moturoa.")

This week's racing fixtures:—Wednesday, Dannevirke R. C. Steeplechase meeting; Thussday, Danncvirko Hunt and Ashburton R.C. Spring meeting; Friday, Aahburton Spring meeting. Master Lupin changed hands at the Marton meeting, being bought by the Wanganui sportsman, Mr. Geo. Harper, for 300gns. The horse will ba trained by Alex. Hall in future. Sportsmen will regret to note the death of Mr. A. McDonald, of Waverley who received fearful injuries as the result of a motor bicycle accident. The deceased gentleman held several high positions in Waverley, and was secretary to tho Wanganui Hunt Club. Trainer R. Mason arrived at Wanganui on Friday with four horses, Nones, Xantlioa, Banksia, and Bimeter. The writer saw them working on Saturday morning, and Nones went beat of the quartette. After making all the pace in the Tutaeuui Welter (St furlongs) on Wednesday, Lady Amai looked a fair bet in tho Rangitikei Handicap (6 furlongs) tho following day. They put Arthur Oliver on top, and duly landed the coin. The marc paid a good dividend, and was followed homo by Coropet and Veto, the three placed horses hailing from this province. Veto was galloping over every tiling at the finish, and is worth noting for sprint very shortly. Chaban, winner of the Hunters' Hurdles at the Rangitikei meeting, is a rather common looking aged bay gelding by Strowan—Baby. Ho was heavily backed away from the course,, but just squeezed home by a smile from the hot favorite, Roscblush. Mona Park, a black mare trained by 1!. Brougli, was a runner in this event, but she did not look ready. She may be useful later on. Glissando, the big boom from Auckland, wa3 started twice at Marton, and strongly backed each pop. She was not good enough for our hacks, however, and finished well back each day. For winning tho Hunt Steeple at Marton, Ranter was bumped up a stone in the Rangitikei Hunt Cup, but it made not difference to the result. Ranter just strolled home, Billy Adams having two very comfortable rides. At the conclusion of the Rangitikei meeting the Hon. J. D. Ormond's horses were railed through to Wanganui, where they are engaged this month. Nita lost her position at a critical moment in tho Hack Steeplechase on Thursday, and although she camo again at the finish she could npt quite reach our old friend Kat.ua, who scored a long overdue win. Tirohanga and Cornelian wero scratched. "Unbeatable" was tho label on Merry Jack in tho Ladies' Barcelet, but tho Merriwee gelding just managed to struggle home a head in front of Ringey. The winner was superbly handled by Mr. Beatson, and that made all the difference. Ringey, by Renown—Forest Rose, is owned by Mr. E. Short, and is a nice cut of a nag. Taranaki's turn came again when Mr. J. R. L. Stanford's roan Captain Dick won the View Halloa Steeple rather cleverly from Gipsy Dot. Tho victory was made easy by the hotstuff Tarero blundering early in tho piece. Captain Dick was turned out in good nick by I', Scally. Welcome Nugget proved himself to bo a game 'un by the way he battled out the Hack Welter with Melodist. The former had not tho best of positions three furlongs from home, and Melodist disputed every inch of tho straight until the last twenty yards, where Welcome Nugget put the question beyond all doubt. The winner paid a good price, several well-known Taranaki punters getting their load on! Tho Marton Brass Band supplied firstrate music at both gatherings, a feature that was much appreciated by those who had to enduro that painful tin whistle which moaned like a distant angry surf on a coral reef the previous Thursday at tho Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting. The latter club showed poor policy in not engaging a band for their meeting. Loyal Arch appears to be very leniently treated at Avondale. Toatere scored again for Mr. J. Hawkins on Saturday last at Canterbury Park (N.S.W.). On tho same day another New Zealand owned nag in Traquette won the Memsie Stakes at Melbourne. "Do you know that this carriage is reserved for commercial travellers?" inquired the stout man of a buxom little woman, who had crowded in with numerous parcels and other impedimenta. "That's all right," she replied, "my husband's a traveller, too." "What line doe.s he travel in," was the next surly inquiry. "Oh! he travels tho province with a stallion," was the reply, and the stout party sat down and sighed heavily!
