THE WOUNDED SOLDIERS.
A LAVENDER FAIR. To gather funds for New Zealand's No. 1 Stationary Hospital, a lavender fair, organised by Mrs. Crooke, Miss iPoliard and others of the Membership of Stones, was held at the Oleadon Convalescent Home yesterday afternoon and last evening. Though the afternoon was only showery, the , uncertainty of the weather conditions necessitated alterations in the arrangements, the fair being 'held under cover instead of in the open, and the proposed competitions were dispensed wilh. There was a large attend'ance both in the afternoon and in the evening, the function being most sun'eessfnl.
StalU were arranged on the verandah. Mrs. Crooke and Miss Frances C'rooke were in charge of a lavender stall, and the tasteful scheme of decoration, combined with the quantity of lavender for sale, formed a pretty bower of blue. A produce stall was managed by Mrs. Colvile and Mrs. McClelland, and the staff was stocked with a great variety of tempting articles which readily found purchasers. Mrs. Mason was in charge of a. stall filled with sewing and other articles provided by the Membership of Stones, the work being much admired. One of the most interesting attractionot the fair was an exhibition of pictures lent by different people. Altogether there were about 100 pictures on view, and they covered the walls of two rooms. A feature of the exhibition was a collection of views of old New Zealand, including several s:enes of New Plymouth, dating back as far as 1843, while the other pictures made an attractive group of oils, water celors, etchings and prints, touching on a great varietv of subjects. Tn a large room, beautifully decorated with lavender and violets, afternoon lea was served bv Misses I. and W. Crooke, Outfield (2). Whitcombe (•>), MtCleland, Dodahun. \V. Webster. T. Pollard, C. Leatham, ("!. Rowley, Christina \\>lie. P. Griffiths, and Tlalcombe (21. In the evening the fair was well patronned. The Citizens' Hand played several items and Mrs. Phil Nathan gave two recitations, which were much appreciated. Earli- in the evening all the stalls were sold out. Altogether (lie hospital will benefit by over £SO by the fair.
The ruffle for a cake donated liy Mrs. D. K. Morrison wn.s drawn last nisrlit. the winning ticket being No. which is held by Miss S. Lawrence. The winner is only three years old, and No. 3 ticket was bought for her oil her third birthday.
