IMPROVING THE BEACH.
WORK OF NGAMOTU SOCIETY. Mie annua.l meeting of the Ngainotu Seaside Improvement Society was held last night. Mr. J. Ifayden presided. The annual report, which was adopted, stated: —The society was formed less than twelve months ago by a small band of willing workers, who have expended a great deal of labor, whereof the results will only be appreciated in after years. The beach at that time was a small forest of lupins, with broken glass and tins plentifully scattered about, which entailed a good deal of labor in clearing. The Borougli Council generously gave a cottage situated at Fitzrov, which was re-erected on the beach at a cost of juat over £2O, and your executive expect a revenue of from £lO to £ls from it thU coming season. A fair amount of work still remains to be done to the cottage to make it habitable, which will be one of the first duties of the incoming committee. A good deal of time has been spent in connection with the Harbor Board in respect to rules and regulations governing the erection of summer residences on the foreshore. The executive lias to thank the Harbor Board for the very Wndly consideration they have shown in dealing with the society. Tho society is now able to let sites for building purposes, subject to certain conditions, at the Tate of £2 10s ,per annum, of which the society derives £l. A fairly large revenue is anticipated from this source, as applications for site? are coming in very freely. In addition to this the Board has given a donation of £ls, wliich has enabled the society to securely fence in several acres anl this has been liberally planted with several hundred pohutukawas, puriri, karaka, and other trees and shrubs. The financial position of the society shows a debit glance of £9 2s. The report concludes by referring to v the excellent services rendered by the secretary, Mr. R. Ellis, whose unabated ardour has gone a long way towards keeping the society above water. Tihe following were appointed an executive committee: Messrs J. Hayden, J. IToiucyfield, G. Braund, R. J. Deare, and R, Ellis. The following committee was appointed:—Mosars J. R. Hill, W. Roberts, H. S. Saunders, G. Braund, L. Hoffmann, fi. Partes, J. Hon<jyfield, J. Spurge, F. J. SmaUbone, W. Whitate, R. Clemow E. Bayly, D. Hooker, W. Jury, A. Smith, L, de Laundv, F. Thomson, and T. Thomson. Mr. J. Hayden was re-elected chairman of the committee and Mr. R. Ellis was re-elected secretary.
