BOROUGH COUNCIL.
OFFICIAL REPORTS. Meetings of the Tramways and Works Committees of the New Plymouth Borough Council were held on Monday evening, the following business being transacted:— TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE. Letters from the town clerk with reference to the flotation of the £55,000 and £5500 tramways loans were referred to the Mayor and the chairman (Councillor Burgess] to interview the Counoil's bankers, with power to act. Instructions were given to invite applicationa for the position of electrical tramways engineer and manager, at a salary of £350 per annum. WORKS COMMITTEE. Miss E. C. Evans and others were informed that, as there was already a good footpath on one side of Rawliiti road, the Council could not see its way to effect the further improvements asked for; the borough engineer's letter with reference to Mr. J. Downs' complaint re alteration of footpath in Devon street west was referred back foi a further report; the resignation of the assistant inspector, W. E. Inch, was accepted; the engineer's letter re regra/iing of portion of Fit.zroy road was referred back to him to ascertain whether. the whole of the amount allocated for this street had been expended; instructions were given that a copy of the engineer's letter re Avenue road stormwater drainage be forwarded to the High School Board, and that, on the Board agreeing to the work being carried out on the terms originally agreed, the borough engineer should proceed with the sa , ffie;°the boroiigh engineer's report in regard to extension of sewer pipes in Weymouth street to Mr. Rellars' property was referred back to him for an estimate of the cost, and instructions were given that he should endeavor to arrange for a combined drain for the other properties mentioned in his report; Messrs Sanderson and Griffiths were informed that water would be made to sections in Wakefield Avenue from the South road main provided the applicants agreed to pay the whole cost of the work: that, subject lo the borough solicitors being satisfied as to tho legality thereof, the. borough engineer be instructed to reserve am] plant the central portion of the street known as Nob's Line as is shown on the plan now before the Council, as in the opinion of the Council the ordinary traffic on such street will not be impeded by such planting; instructions were given for the public notification of the Council's intention to enforce tlie new by-laws; instructions were given for the borough engineer to inspect all hoardings and report whether any alterations or additions were necessary to render them safe, and also to report as to their general condition and sightliness; it was decided to take no action in regard to the request of the Taumarunui Patriotic Committee that the Government be asked not to enforce the Gaming and Lotteries Act during the present crisis.
