URUTI NEWS.
MATTERS OF INTEREST. Saturday afternoon was a busy afternoon at Ifeuti, when settlers from near and far met to discuss matters of inerest in connection with the welfare of the district. There was a fair attendance, including many ladies, some of whom had ridden many miles over roads which, as one expressed it, would not be safe to venture upon at night. The gathering was a thoroughly representative one.
URUTI NURSING ASSOCIATION. The annuai meeting of the Uruti Nursing Association was the first meeting held, Mr. W. Old (chairman) presiding. In his opening remarks, the chairman (stated that, on the whole, the year had been a very satisfactory one. There had been a slight falling off in subscriptions, but the payment of fees had increased. Their balance was £3S, within £3 of last year, which must be considered fairly satisfactory. Various improvements had been effected at the cottage, where the telephone had been installed. fXur.se Langley -had resigned during the year and a new nurse had been appointed, whom he hoped would remain some time, as constant changes were not beneficial. Commenting on the attendance, he remarked that he would have liked to see more present, as it was up to tl« settlers to do their share of work on tie committee. 'Other members also referred to the lack of interest taken in an institution that was of undoubted value to the district. The balance-sheet showed receipts to have amounted to £lO2 18s Od, the principal items being subscriptions £4O lfls, accounts £O2 8s Od. Expenditure had amounted to £1.17 17s Od, the principal items being: Hospital and Charitable Aid Board £GB Gs lOd, board for patients £l2, medical requirements £l3 ■is 3d, firewood £S 15s. The balance in hand was £3B Is Sd. The decrease in subscriptions was strongly commented on, the opinion feeing expressed that but for the people further back the Association would be in a bad position. A vote of sympathy with Mr. A. 11. Halcombe in his recent bereavement was passed. Mr. W. Old tljen relinquished the chair, to which Mr. H. G, Richardson was voted by the meeting. The retiring chairman and committee were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. In acknowledging it, the chairman paid a tribute to the work of the secretary (Mm. Larsen). i It was decided to ' increase the committee to nine, and the following were elected:—Mesdames Musker and Larsen. Msesrs S. Musker, W. Old, Thompson', Scott, Wells, Richardson and McAllnm. Mr. W. Old was reelected cliuirman, Mrs. Larsen secretary and Mr. JLAllum treasurer. Mrs. Larsen, who has been secretary since the inauguration of the Association intimated her desire to resign.
'SOLDIERS' DAY. A meeting of ladies was held, at which it was decided to hold a soldiers 1 day on October o in aid of the No. 1 Stationary Hospital. Mesdamc-s Muskcr, Alpe, Guscott, Old, Larsen and Misses Woollak and M. .Murray were appoiued a committee, with Mrs. Larsen as secretary. The proceeds will be forwarded through the North Taranaki Patriotic League. 'NORTH TARANAKI PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. . Messrs Beokbessinger (Mayor of Waitara), chairman of the North Taranaki Patriotic League, and Mr. T. Buchanan addressed the meeting on matters connected with the North Taranaki Patriotic League. Mr. Larsen, chairman ol the Association, presided. Mr. Ikekbessinger referred to the steps that were being taken throughout New Zealand to raise funds to assist the sick and wounded of New Zealand and their dependents. It was now- proposed to form associations under the military area, viz., from Wellington to Napier and Wellington to New iPlymouth. There could be various patriotic branches, and it would be necessary for the head of each district to form committees with a view to stimulating interest and showing what caoh district was doing un raising a fund required to assist those who were doing their, duty for as. In Wairarapa, he pointed out, £70.000 had been gathered by systematic means, and it should not be a hard matter lo raise a goodly sum in North Taranaki, The money would be used to supplement the amount paid by the fiovernmpnt (it was hard to say how much, probably 30s to 335). No one would receive more than another, no matter what his position may have been. Mr. T. Buchanan congratulated the district on the number of men it had sent to the front. He questioned if any other district had sent as many in proportion to population. Their casualties could therefore be expected to be greater also. Wairarapa had subscribed a lot of money, but we had sent a lot of men. The idea of the scheme was to augment the money given by the (lovernnicnt so as to enable (he men to live decently. The (lovernmeiit. with its many calls, had done its bent for the men, but it was not enough. It had first Icon propo<cd to 'Win a national fund, but Olago and Auckland hail decided to go on their own. They therefore had 'to depend on the military area, si-heme. He urged on them the necessity of raising as much as povible ra as to make a good allowing. He urged them to form a committee in L'Tuti to assist the North Taranaki Patriotic League ami to appoint one or two delegates to the League. They must endeavor to conserve to North Taranaki the funds collected within the area from lluiraugi lo Aivakino. oilierwise it might appear tlial tliev were not doing their duty. Already he estimated that mjhib rj,-,!)!) ha,| gone from the district ■through some other ohaniel. He wanted everyone In i|n his duly indivMually and 'collectively. Tie also hoped they would not forget the liclgians.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. The chairman stilted that a strong committee would undountcdiv he appointed at a meeting to tie held at an wily dale, A VALUABLE CA.KK.
