QPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondents.) The Tennis Glut's ball was our best dance this season. The hall waa decorated with evergreens find flags, and the stage set out in drawing room fashion ror the onlookers. About QO couples took part in the dancing, the rmi&ia for which was provided by Council's Orchestra, comprising Miss Cross (violin), Mesm'a Clague (cornet), Council (piano). Fancy dresses were not so numerous as expected, coining sq soon after the carnival and fancy fair. Amongst those who looked nice were:—Hisses MaJoolm, Italy; Mark ham, Mora Macdonald; M. Chambers, Taranaki; England and France; B. Mildenliall, Britannia.; Ilolmas, Russia; G. Wallis, Japanese; L. O'Brien, Belgium; I£. Devery, Trance; M. Des Forges; Cinderella, E. Bayers; Ireland, K. O'Brien; Folly, A. Newman; Territorials, A. ClaTko and O'Donnell. Gentlemen:—Pack of <«/rds, J. Rowlands; King of Belgium, A. Harding; Pierotte, P. McGmth; Masher, C. Trotter. I might say that the drees "Tarankai" represented our national character, the dairymaid in her everyday attire when Polly and Jersey stand to tie milk pail. The most original character was the "Wedding Cake," xepresented by Mrs. Marshall, and she was awarded the gentlemen's prize by popular vote. The result caused a little stir in tenrlis circles, details of which are unknown to your readers outside of Opunake, and having a great dead of connection with recent club matters that have caused much comment locally. However, Opuaake is laughing heartily over the result. The lady's prize was won by Mi® O'Brien, with tihe national dress, "Ireland." The secretaries (Mr. Knell suid Dr. Barrows) are to bo complimented on. the success of the patriotic hall. The Horticultural Society has added a number of knitting competitions to the Glasses already scheduled for the forthcoming spring show. Special exhibits are expected from the New Plymouth nurserymen. Usually, they make a first-class show of cut blooms and flowering shrubs. At the Tennis Bail on Wednesday evening IPrivate Des Forges was the recipient of a cigarette holder and case on behalf of the members of the club. The president (Mr. Knell) made the presentation, and spoke of Private Des forges as a very capable young player. Privates Ila.vryaii and Jeff Austin are here on furlough from the Kangiotu canrji. The marriage of Mr. Henry Bawoutt Baylis, the son of Mr. Baylia, of Piharaa, to Miss Helen Paterson Maeray, daugh* ter of Mrs. Miaohray, Matino Road, was celebrated at St. Alban's Chuiroh, Te Kiri, by the Rev. 0.
