Proceedings opened with the Patea Hack Steeplechase. Loopline was withdrawn, leaving five runners. Nita was a strong favorite, while Cornelian also had a good following. The race was a chaptor of accidents. Cornelian ran off at the first fence, and Pioyal Patron followed suit at the next obstacle. Utility made the pace, followed by Nita and Clemency. The latter ran off at the stand double, but was brought back and set in pursuit of the leaders. Nita closed on Utility going along the back, but ran off at the second fence of the post and rails four furlongs from home, leaving Utility to complete the course alone. Nita and Clemency, caused further amusement by falling. The former was remounted, and gained second money. A protest for interference was dismissed. Scratcliings reduced the field in the Waverley Hunters' Hurdles Handicap to five, the Mankpoto gelding Potomii being made a solid favorite., Camp Guard led into the straight from Vanqueror and Potomii, and the trio were well together passing the stand. At tlm seven furlongs post Potomii fell. Camp Guard was never afterwards troubled, and won by five lengths from Vanqueror, who boat Co On by fifty yards. Eight horses were saddled up for the Momohaki Maiden Handicap, the Wanga-nui-owner Vladian carrying the bulk of the totalisator investments. W, Young got liewa Rewa out smartly, and she was followed by White Blaze and Cornice along the back. White Blaze made up considerable ground in the straight, but could not quite reach Rewa Rewa, Cornice was a fair third, and Cordon fourth.

Expedition, who was too sore to start, and Consul were the only defections from the Hunt Cup. It was a poor betting race, and Rangimaru and Argo divided favoritism. The first fence cut the field down to a trio, Hydraulic and Rangimaru falling and Osprey running off. Argo led into tho straight from Avon and Laddie, and the order remained unchanged throughout, Argo winning by four lengths from Avon, with Laddie down at tho bottom of the straight. A protest for taking the wrong course was dismissed. Rewa Rewa was the only defection from tho Kakaramca Hack Handicap, a good field of eleven going to tho post. Bivouac and Iceberg were tho first to find their feet, but Coropet and Flying Camp quickly headed Iceberg. Coropet was in front three furlongs from home, followed by Bivouac and Flying Camp. Bivouac retired at the turn, and Flying Camp, Welcome Nugget and Iceberg joined issue. A great race home saw tbft Quartette pass the judges bos almost

in line, Iceberg getting the, verdict by a head from Coropet, who just headed Welcome Nugget and Flying Camp. Zola was fifth. DANNBVIRaiE B.C. HANDICAPS. Wellington, August 26. WAVERLEY NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") Those who journeyed to Waverley on Thursday expecting to see a good exhibition of jumping were sadly disappointed. The Darktown Steeplechase never caused more amusement than the two bjg fonce"«events at the EgmontWanganm Hunt meeting, but the fact remains that the debacle was a disgrace to the hunting fraternity on this coast, ami if nothing better can bo shown than Thursday's ludicrous exhibitions it is hard to see why hunt clubs were granted totalisator permits at all. The steeplechase course ms certainlv a stiff one and the obstacles should have been at least twice as wide, but not one of the hunters jumped decentlv, and some of the gentlemen jockster's were not glued on too securely either. Utility and Argo won races, but both fenced slovenly, the former in particular being very lucky to complete the course. The fun commenced with the Patca Hack Steeple. Nita and Cornelian monopolised tho betting. Cornelian ran off at the first fence and Royal Patron followed suit at the next. Clemency side-stepped the second of the stand double, leaving the old plodder, Utility, with a fair lead of Nita. The latter got within striking distance of the leader four furlongs from home, and then ran off, leaving Utility to win. Clemency had been brought back and "punched" over the fence he had shirked, and Nita also started again. Nita piled,'further agony on to the fiasco by falling at the next fence, and Clemency followed suit. It was great! Nita galloped riderles3 past the stand, and after being rescued by the Clerk of the Courso was mounted again, and managed to keep on her feet long enough to gain second money. The Hunt Club Steeple was practically the same. Avon and Argo went off first, Hydraulic and Rangimaru turned turtle, and Osprey ran off. Argo then assumed command, Avon falling back through gazing too long at the obstacle, while Laddie's rider appeared to have got tangled up in hie gm M tgilgd right pff, it was a

great race (?) for 75 sovs and a ten pound cup! Riders had got cold feet by the time the Ladies' Bracelet Steeple rolled along, and only four horses (out of fifteen carded) wont to the post. War Head and Bally Rahine toppled over at the second fence, and Captain Dick refused. Hydraulic was left with the course to himself, and he slowed down and struggled painfully over the re3t of the fences. His jumping was wonderful—in fact, no less marvellous than hli luck in getting round. Captain Dick was brought back to the fence ho missed, and by this time War Head had been remounted and was sailing along the tack stretch. Both noddies then took the remaining fences at show-ring pace. As exhibitions of steeplechasing these races were just tho disay limit! There was one good finish in the afternoon, that of the Kakaramca Hack Handicap, when Welcome Nugget, Coropet, Iceberg, and Flying Camp crossed tho lino almost abreast. Tho judges—there appeared to bo four crammed into the box—did not appear to be too sure as to the placing, and partisans of the various horses were calling names and numbers in great confusion. Eventually Iceberg was placed first, and Coropet and Welcome Nugget in the minor positions. Flying Camp appeared to be level with Welcome Nugget, and many people reckoned the latter nag had his white blazed nose in front. Zola finished fifth. The Maiden resulted in a surprise, the Wanganui-trained Rewa Rewa winning from the word "Go." Billy Young hopped her out with a four lengths "break," and although White Blaze put in a strong challenge in the straight he could not quite reach her. Vladian was the hotstuff, but he couldn't find his feet in the early stages of the race, and finished almost last. Cornice ran a nice race, and may win later on. Lift is not worth feeding, though "Elevation— Eduam" looks good enough breeding for a Cup winner. Glen Esk (Glenullin-Vi-vandel) ran his race in patches, but was running on at the death knock, after doing a windmill act with hia "rudder" at the bend. The Hunters' Flat Handicap saw another hot favorite in Formosus badly downed. He was going well along the back, but Looplinc had his measure at tho turn and won easily from Abalone. The latter is trained by B. T. Bennett at Patea, and is a promising sort. Koheroa, who was supposed to bo able to catch aeroplanes, did not run up to expectations. Soultiform, although looking very "jolly," was made favorite in tho Kakaramea Hack Handicap, but was never in tho fighting ; .]jsc, l pnd finished weU back. His turn will come shortly. Expedition was too sore to start at the meeting. Mr. G. Lupton, who took out the Hunt Cup and 76 sovs for Argo's efforts, was chief winner at the meeting, Messrs Bruce and Gordon, A. Mangusson, I. Lupton, H. A. Nodder, and W. O. Williams each took £35. Mr. G. Lupton was the only double winner at the gathering. Vladian was tried with Walter Raynor up in the Maiden, and had Charlie Price aboard in the Kakaramca Handicp, but in both races he cut up very rough. A track horse, Vladian! Camp Guard, by Campfirc out of a Vanguard mare, was one of the best jumpers r \ the meeting, and easily landed the Hunters' Hurdles. A useful sort too!
