RECRUITING IN NEW ZEALAND.
PROCEEDING SATISFACTORILY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 20. The Minister for Defence was asked to-day if, in view of the heavy requirements in men from New Zealand, the recruiting was. satisfactory. "Recruiting," replied the Minister, "is going on steadily and satisfactorily. Our pre. sent position in that respect is complete justification of the New Zealand policy of a steady registration and the calling up 0 f men for training as wo want them, and I do think that our experience reflects very great credit on the patriotism and loyalty of New Zealanders of between the ages of 20 and -10. Without any great stimulus they have recognised their duty, and have been putting down their names in fairly large numbers. This i s the policy we want. We want 'each man, of his own violition, to recognise his responsijujity, and put his name down and await his call, and thus avoid the stimulus of the platform if it is possible to do so. I, personally, would rather that the men in their own homes thought the matter out, and that every man, especially the unmarried men, should register his name for service, after carefully facing for himself his responsibility. It is good for the character of the nation that each man. should thin solve the problem for himself. It is this that U going to make New Zealand. The man who returns from the front is really the best recruiting agent. He tells the men here exactly what the position at the front is what' the demands there are."
