Mr. T. Dix, surveyor, Wanganui, has been appointed engineer to the Wanganui County Council, out of thirty applieants. Mr. H. Lysaght, formerly of Normanby, and now living at Tauranga, is on a short visit to Taranaki. 'Die death is reported of Dr. Kobert Charlton, of Sydney, the younger son of the late Mr. J. Charlton, 8.M., formerly of Xew Plymouth. Mr. Jack Ingram, who is proceeding to camp with the "Eighths" on Monday, was presented with a wristlet watch by his fellow boarders at Chatsworth Houße last evening. Private advice was received in Wellington last night of the death in action of Lieutenant Holloway Winder, son of Mr. George Winder, a well-known business man. Mr, J. N. Rauch, formerly of the Hawera Post Office Staff, has been appointed lieutenant in B Company Infantry of the Eighth Reinforcements. Still another Patea boy has been wounded at the Dardanelles, Sergeant If. T. Pehimana, a member of the Maori Contingent, being reported wounded in the chest and arm. Constable More, of Methven, who was a member of the Armed Constabulary in Taranaki, is at present on a visit to the coast, after an absence of over thirty years. The Bishop of Auckland arrived- in Inglcwood from Purangi yesterday morning. Ho held a confirmation service ut St. Andrew's Church'at T. 30 in the evening, and proceeds to Okato to-day. Mr. John Faull arrived in New Plymouth yesterday to completo arrangements for the production of tho patriotic military drama, ''The Man Who Stayed at Home," to be staged on Monday, August 30. At the meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board on Thursday a resolution was passed conveying the heartfelt sympathy of the board with the chairman on the loss of his eldest son (Lieutenant Taylor), while lighting for his King and country.

Mr. J. Cowan, who lias been on the stail' of the Normanby Dairy Factory for the last three years, lias received the appointment of manager at the Hairini Factory, Te Awatumu, one of Mr. Goodfellow's factories. There were thirtythree applications. Mr. C. S. Kennedy and his family (Inglewo'od) left for their new home in Takapuna on Thursday. Inglewood thus loses one of her very earliest and best settlers, and everyone will wish them a pleasant and comfortable time in their well-earned retirement. News was received last night that Private IDdgar Mclvor Jennings was killed in action at Callipoli on August 3. He was the third son of Mr. W. T. and Mrs. Jennings, and belonged to the Ruahine (Wairarapa) Company. The ybung man was formerly employed in the New Plymouth Post Office, and left with the first expeditionary force that entrained from licre last year. At Henry Brown and Co.'s factory yesUnlay afternoon, Mr. Ahier, the managing partner, presented, on behalf of the firm and the employees, a pipe and a plentiful supply of tobacco to three of the employees—Messrs 0. Robinson, Ivan Golding, and F. Blackburne —who are leaving on Monday morning for the training camp to join the reinforcements. Ihe death of Mr. K. 11. Holland, of Bunnythorpe, occurred to-day. Mr. Holland went to look for cattle in the morning, and while talking to a friend, fell to the ground and expired. He had been in ill health for some time. He was 50 years of age, aH had lived in the district many years. He was an enthusiastic poultry fancier, and a prize-winner in many parts of the dominion.—Press Association,
