POOR RECRUITING. Sydney, August 18. A number of country recruiting associations have notified. Mr. Holman that apathy and lack of enthusiasm with regard to recruiting is prevalent in the country districts. One says: "The sooner the authorities coldly face the inevitable and compel the shirker to do liia part the sooner the war will end." ■NEW VESSELS. Sydney, August 18. It is announced that the cruiser Brisbane will 'be launched on September 14, and the destroyer Swan on September 29. SUGGESTED CO.UPUWON. Sydney, August 18. In reply to a question in the House as to the closing of tile Stadium, in view of the recent anti-reeruiting demonstrations, Mr. Holman said that the sudden closing of sports grounds would throw large numbers out of work. Measures for greatly increasing the numbers available for military service from those engaged in non-productive ' work were under consideration. AUSTRALIA DAY FUND. Sydney, August IS. The Australia Din\ funds total £507,808. A SUBSTANTIAL DONATION. Received August 18, 11.20 p.m. Sydney, August 18. The annual meeting of the Australian Jockey Club voted £IO,OOO to the patriotic funds. In the event of the year's profits exceeding £IO,OOO, the surplus will be similarly devoted. This makes £20,000 the club has vot«d, besides Jiaving been instrumental in raising an additional £12,000.
