BIG FIRE IN CANTON. THOUSANDS PERISH. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, August 16. The steamer Empire, recently at Hong Kong, estimates that 100,000 people at Canton perished from fire alone, including 1000 soldiers engaged in rescue work. Two thousand five hundred shops were destroyed. Robbers attacked the starving escapees, shooting them down like animals when they found they were destitute.
