STRATFORD.

UOItUUGH WATER SUPPLY (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Saturday. .The report of the borough overseer (Mr. T. D. Sullivan) recommending the building of a concrete weir and reservoir to hold 400,000 gallons should not lie lightly passed over by the council. It is absolutely necessary that something should be done, and that soon, to improve the water supply of the borough. At present the water runs direct from the Patea River into the pipes* and no filtration whatever is provided, with the result that, at times, the water is muddv and unlit for drinking purposes. Further, trout and eels get into the pipes, and in some cases have caused a blockage. Several schemes have been before the council in the past to improve the supply, but all have been turned down, and the present suggestion is the only feasible solution of 'the dillicultv. The council should immediately consider the matter and go to the ratepayers for a loan, which is certain to bo carried. Further provision should be made to take the land at the intake, under the Public Works Act. A special general meeting of the borough council will be held on 'luesday evening to confer with the electrical supply company re purchasing its undertaking.

GENERAL. The Ilawera quartette, who rendered some items at the farewell to the troopers on Thursday night, certainly deserve credit for the fine performance they gave. Since the outbreak of the war they have given their services to twenty-eight patriotic concerts and sung over ninety items, a record of which they may well feel proud.

Two of our men who are leaving with the next draft of reinforcements walked home after the farewell on Thursday night, a distance of IS miles. .Men like this are bound to make a name for the nisei ves at the front.
