ORDERED TO TRENTHAM.

AUCKLAND RECRUITS. A PROTEST MADE. . .Auckland, Thursday. . Notifications have been sent to iihu hundred Aucklanders wlio have enlisted to parade at 8 a.m. on August 18 and proceed to Trentham by the noon train. The Mayor, Mr. Ounsoii, says it is absolutely inconceivable that 'the Defence Department, at this stage, would order nine hundred men to proceed to Trentham for training. It is more than ever difficult to understand, in view of the fact that the Royal Commission has

sot completed its investigations. He wired lo t'l3 Mimster of Defence asking if the report is correct. "If so, in view of the recent conditions and the present investigation, do you think it a risht course lo direct these men lo go to Trentluuu? In view of the large number of men directed to leave Auckland and the large additional number required in future, will you consider forthwith the establishing of a camp in the Auckland district, in accordance with the Prime Minister's recent indications?'"' Wellington. Thursday.

In connection with the telegram from Auckland, the Defence Minister informed a representative of the New Zealand Times to-night that it was quite impossible to entertain the suggestion that a camp should be established at Auckland. He had regarded the matter as settled by the previous correspondence. The medical officers said that Trentham camp was suitable for the reception of the men. They had recommended certain alterations, and these were being carried out. The Defence authorities would do anything else that was shown to be necessary, or desirable, when the .report of the Trentham Commission came to hand. In the meantime, the training of the troops for the front had to proceed without a check, and the most suitable place for receiving the men and eonnnencin;,' their training was Trentham. "Trentham is just ns healthy as the other camps," added the Minister. "Probably it is the most healthy of them all nt the present time. Enormous improvements have lieen made there, and they continue to be made,"
