CIVIL SERVICE BALL.
A very enjoyable and most successful ■tall, which was organised by the ch'il servants of New .Plymouth, eventuated in the Coronation Hall on Thursday evening. Tile hall was gorgeously decorated with bunting and greenery, while from the centre of the ceiling Jmiig a huge Japanese umbrella, the points of which were picked otft in colored electric lights. Excellent .-music, was rendered by Mrs. Arnold George's orchestra, consisting of Mrs. George, Messrs Cooke ■Murphy, B.' George (violins), H. West (flute), S. Cottier (.clarionet). A. Wiley (cornet), ,T. Sturmey. (bass), A. Pearee (drums), anil was arranged on a dais in the middle of the dancing floor. The services of this orchestra, which contributed so largely to the success of the function, were gratuitously given, and the opening item of the "Allied Anthems" was particularly appropriate to the occasion. Extras were played'by Misses Kir.ldbv, K. Bennett, .Brewer, (). Mackay," E. Bennett, Mrs. Broadhead, and Mr. Hodson. The supper was arranged in one of the off-rooms, the floral decorations being masses of scariei japonica, and tiny flags of all nations, the effect of which was greatly admired. At the entrance to the supper-room a sweets and flower stall was arranged under the supervision of Misses Putt, McGrath, Woodman and Oxenham. (For the non-dancers, bridge and euchre were arranged in some of the off rooms, arid the prizes were won bv the following:—Bridge. Mesdames A. 18. R, Fookcs, Jfervey, Hall and A. Waters; auction bridge, Mesdames 'Mills and Grant; euchre. Mesdames (Pellew and Hawkins, while iMr. Green annexed the gentleman's prize. The floor for dancing was in excellent order and those who acted as masters of ceremonies were Messrs Eyre, K. T. Humphries, Ainsworth and Gilbert.
During the evening. Mr. Ken Webster auctioned masses of charmingly made flags of all nations, which greatly added to the funds.
