A Wellington telegram says that 111'. 11. C. Kirk, of Petone, has received word that his youngest son, -l'rivatc Edward Kirk, died of enteric fever at the Dardanelles.

Mr, C, Hamblyn, one of the masters at the New Plymouth Boys' High Selioal, lias been selected for the Eighth Reinforcements, and lias been granted leave of absence from the school.

After forty-three years' service, Mr VV. I'\ Dickey, who has been Collector of Customs at Napier since 1012, retired 011 •superannuation on Saturday. Ah a token of esteem he was presented with a handsome case of pipes by the Xapier and Port Almriri stall's.

Captain (I. W. lir.iddell, Group Commander, of Mastertun, has been appointed Assistant Director of Supplies and Transport for the Wellington Military District, and will be stationed at Palmerston North. lie has been temporarily succeeded by Major J. Osburnc-Lilly

Notice is to bund that Mr. Lance liuchler, of the Stratford School, oas been appointed Lieutenant to the Third Reinforcements (Liverpool's Own), and is to join cainp 011 September 11. Mr. liuchler is deservedly popular with the Stratford High School Cadets, and the boys are very proud of his appointment.

Miss A. Ballantine, of Manaia, who has joined the Volunteer Sisterhood Association, and is about to leave for Trcntham camp, was the recipient; of a series of presentations at the Presbyterian Church 011 Friday evening in recognition of her zeal r.nd services : n church work during her residence there. There was an attendance of about 51) members of the congregation and friends of ifiss tiallamitot*.

Private Rupert Nicholls, who is an inmate of the Davis Street Private Hospital, Wellington, suffering from a shattered (high sustained at the Dardanelles, was put under the X-rays, and five pieces of bullets were discovered in the wound in his thigh. On Monday night the matron of the hospital wired the Nicholls family at Inglcwocd stating that an operation had been performed and the patient was progressing as well as coul.l be expected under the circumstances. The death occurred at Wellington on Monday of Mr. Andrew Barron, of the Customs Department. The deceased, who was only 35 years of age, was a well-known cricketer in Dunedin, Timaru, Ohristehurch, Wellington, and Auckland, having gained representative honors in South Canterbury, Canterbury, 1 and Wellington. He leaves a widow and three children.

Mr. J. S. Jameson, who, since 180!, has occupied the position of general manager for New Zealand of the United Insurance Company, is retiring at the end of the present month, and has been appointed by the head ofliee, 5-vdney, lo a seat on the New Zealand board. Mr. Jameson's successor will be Mr. L. W. Andrews, district, secretary at the Auckland branch, and formerly attached to the Wellington oiliee. The principal o.'iice of the company is being transferred to A'-ckland.

The farewell smoke concert tendcicd to departing territorials by the members of ''1)" Company on Monday evening at Stratford was a splendid success, about sixtv-live attending. Captain-Surgeon Steven, M.0., presided, and among those present were his Worship the Mayor (Mr. .7. W. Boon), Mr. W. P. Kirkwoo.l, and Veteran John P.owe, of His Majesty s Veterans. Several toasts were proposed in the heartiest manner by the company, that of the departing territorials being especially honored. Several items were contributed by members of the gathering and were well received. After a very pleasant evening the gathering dispersed about midnight. ■
