Other evidence disclosed that some of the reinforcements were sent away before they could receive the necosary musketry instruction. It was declared in reply to a question that the majority of the'men hud received none, and more than half the recruits did not know howto load and unload.
Stall'-Serjeant Chalkor gave evidence, that there wcn> not enough rifles for the recruits. He said he was prepared to answer any questions, hut if he answered, too many freely later on he might be a aull'erer.
Mr. Justice "Rich suggested that they might take witness' answers privately. ("milker said it would not help him, as any evidence detrimental to the heads of the department could leak out.
Counsel snid that he was definitely instructed by the department to give an assurance that there would be no victimisation of any witnesses.
The subsequent evidence was confined to a few harmless questions. Mr. Justice Kich presented an interim report. It suggests improvements to the latrines, increases in the medical and commandant's stalfs. better supply of hot water, better arrangements for cooking, including nodical examination of amateur cooks and insistence on their cleanliness.
