An- 'ill, VI. 14 Canterbury .1 ('. Winter. September 1- Marlon .I.e. Spring. TUIIF TuPii S. (liv -.Motor™.") Manawalu Hunt, im Wednesday. U'aiinato Plains handicaps arc (lup on Monday.

Kmporador has dropped "lit of tin l'ljisom Handicap. Old Atualina is in work again in South 'Stralia.

Nightwntch is unsound, and imiy be counted out of the racing game.

Mr. J. George's horses have been handed out plenty of weight for Paliiatui engagements. The stipendiaries have reported to tin: conference that there is a heap of bookmaking' going on at present. Wonderful!' Who let the cat out of tin' l)ili[? Sir George McLean was recently ;'■> elected president of the Uunedin Jockey Club. This makes the twentieth consecutive year, and Sir George is beginning to be 'regarded as a fixture iu tlmt 'possie." Laconic par. from the Newcastle correspondent of the Referee:—Several New Zealanders who visited Maitland and Newcastle on Saturday and yesterday and won large sums on Ton Tor.', left here this morning on their way back to the dominion." More foreign capital for Taranaki! There is a jumper in work at Clarcville named Keternity. The person responsible for this freak of nomenclature cannot be accused of not looking aliei.d

Talking of tiomcnclatui'.', honorable mention goes to some rerent efforts, as Maori Mat (Maori King—Tatters), Contusion (All Black—All Blue). Pourfiarler (Finland—Gossip). Ail Talk (All Blatk —Wordy Warfare), Cease Fire (Field Battery--Truee), and last, but not ]ca.»t, —Poor Lila (iPenury—Lady Lila). As a counterblast to the above it :s only neccssarv to quote F.ralf (Klysian —Flare). The idea of reversing goc:i names by Carbine, etc., is surely a Stone-Age act. Surely all the sensible names are not used up yet.

Tirohanga must have filled the handieapper's eye as an ideal 'chaser. The local prnd is called upon to concede avoirdupois to a. number of winners in the Hick Steeple at Pahiatua, and at the weights the chances of Master Malachi, Stockade and Grey Renown all look more rosy. The entries received for the Waimate Plains Trotting Club's meeting exceeded all expectations. Not only did the nominations for the seven events total 157, but entries e<imo from all parts of the dominion. Mr. Ulic Shannon has some fine horses to handicap, and this month's meeting should attract a big crowd. Once the game gets known in Taranaki, it is sure to catch on. Improvement in the local class of trotters will follow, and after all an improved breed is what is badly wanted.

j National weights are now the topic of the hour. As expected, Clontaft hoarled the poll in the big steeplechase with 12.7 —the maximum. The crack 'Stralian has "cracked up," so may be dropped at once. Tim Doolan has proved his ability both at Riccarton and in Victoria, and with 11.7 h very well treated. Soporific, El Gallo, and : Jaekman appear to :be harshly treated, and Scots Guard, Daylight Dill anc Morning all read better. Glenmore has lost his pace, and Golden Glow his jumping ability. Sandy Paul is not badly handicapped with 10.2, and dd Napier form has more pretensions to get the course than several near the same (mark. Bollin appears to be the pick of the light-weights. Chortle has 12.7 in the. Hurdles, but is well up to that weight. Whether the stable will rely on Multiply 10.11 is doubtful. Even with his crusher Chortle must be accounted dangerous. Royal Arms is heavily weighted with 11.0—his solitary victory at Ellerslie evidently having greatly impressed the weightadjuster. Lconta, Tragedy King and El Gallo all read better. The Century Hurdles winner, Styrax, is not over- . burdened with 10.0, and promising sorts I like Master Lupin, Hurakia and Queen's J Post are all well in. On the whole it \ is a good handicap, and one that will puzzle punters considerably!, Another problem of weight is the Winter Cup. Chortle has a load in 12.9, and may be troubled to give Awahou two stone, as well as greater weights to Raupani, Blucstonc, Mia Cara, Ardent i and numerous light-weights. This race is c always hard to pick, and this year's I event is no easier than usual.
