SWALLOWING THE INSULT. A GRAVE CRISIS APPROACHING. (Times and Svdnev Sim Services.) Received July 13, 7.20 p.m. London, July 12. The Times' Washington correspondent says that the American press finds the German -u-oposals intolerable, insulting, cynical, lawless, and altogether disappointing, yet there are scant signs of opinion in favor of "taking the bit between their teeth, much less of a. rupture of diplomatic relations, than formerly. He surmised that the President will not resort to exercise this unless Germany repeats the Lusitania incident, or an ii|imlly outrageous act. The Tillies, in a leading article, comments that the time is clearly coming when diplomacy will have to give way to some more positive form of asserting American rights. The paper says that a grave and unprecedented crisis in American history is approaching. AMERICA'S REPLY. M \Y DEMAND DEFINITE STATEMENT. Received July 71, 12.30 a.m. Washington, July 13. The opinion in ollicial quarters is that the American reply will demand a definite statement of Germany's attitude, such as will determine whether diplomatic relations can. continue. WILL RE.IIOCT GERMAN OVERTURES Washington, .July 12. The State admits that the German reply precipitates a grave situation, but talk of war is conspicuously absent.. The next American note will reject the, German overtures and reassert America's insistence to all her rights as a neutral country. The press denounces the German reply as impudent.
